With a team loaded with freshman and sophomores from another coaching staff will there be a transfer movement? Oregon has a lot of talent, which has underperformed against lesser competition. With the Lanning coaching group will there be expectations some players won't want to adhere too? I have a feeling the coaching staff will expect different levels of performance and outputs. These expectations will create players who didn't sign up for the culture direction. Maybe the players will want the new culture, expected it when they came, I hope so. There will also be players who may not want to live up to the new levels demanded, or can't reach them. I think it will be interesting to see who stays and who goes. It will also be interesting to see who starts and who sits. With the new offense and defense there will be players who may have started and now don't meet the standards. This will be another interesting development as the spring season comes and fall camp begins. It won't just be at the qb position. At wide receiver, safety, on the defensive line and throughout players are going to be looked upon with a completely different group of eyes and minds. This will also begin in the weight room, and training table. If we are going to beat the Stanfords and dominate the FSU bulldog type teams players are going to be having to adjust to a new program or transfer out. We also may have a coaching group who are going to actively discuss this process with some players. With the team loaded with young players and fewer scholarships to offer their guys coaches may be looking to move some players. So far it is nice to see player wanting to stick around. I have a feeling this may not stay that way as the bar is lifted and players can't reach that high. This will be something to watch as the months go by and the season slowly gets closer.

Aren't you in South Carolina? All states have college available for free for seniors. I actually enjoy taking Coursera courses occasionally. It is great to keep the grey matter stretching and flexing. Mine isn't an eligibility problem just ability. 41. South Carolina Residents 60 and above can attend classes at state schools on a credit or noncredit basis, pending space available, for free. The school must grant admission via its normal procedures. Technology, lab and other fees are the responsibility of the student. Many South Carolina community colleges offer online courses for those interested.

85 on scholarship and 9 seniors means Oregon needs to develop the players on the roster. I also counted 30 freshman and 30 sophomores. I realize there are quite a few redshirt guys and some who will leave for the NFL, but Oregon is a team without a lot of wiggle room for recruiting over the next couple years without transfer outs. Lanning has an interesting job going forward with his recruiting, development and really management of the roster he inherited.

First off you either coach or leave. When you just send it in at the end of the season it doesn't do anyone any good. The last game against Utah was pathetic. The team wasn't prepared and he was checked out already, so just leave and let someone else coach. It was at least the perfect opportunity for Mario to show he could delegate, but he didn't. Chip Kelley sent $439 to a fan after the Boise State game because of the poor performance. Mario should have paid the expenses of every fan who went to the Utah game. Second don't recruit while you are on Oregon's dime and leaving to go to another school. Miami's #1 commit, was Oregon's top recruit, was visited while he was supposedly Oregon's coach. Step away while you are transitioning to the new position. I am also proud that the contract offer was pulled from Mario. It was a privilege, and an honor to have the opportunity to coach at Oregon, and when he flinched, it was over. I am over it, but there were more ways he could have made the ending more amicable, in my view, but agree, it was a difficult situation. He did better than the last guy. I am also grateful for the fact that he did leave and it worked out, once again, very well for Oregon. Onward, forward, and never look back!

Let me count the ways he could have done it differently, but agree thanks for the memories and the cash payout! Welcome Head Coach Dan Lanning, leader of the Oregon Football Program.

I just hope our student athletes have better development going forward. All these guys seemed to have potential which wasn't brought out during their time at Oregon. With a more stable, and able coaching crew the recruits should do better going forward. They also need better trusted consults about their potential at the next level. Best of luck to all these guys at the next level and their next chapters in life!

The biggest question may be the coaching of the position groups. The statement about how Joe Burrow changed a team is legitimate. He had to transfer to a program where he could start and would use his skills. The identification of talent and the development of the qb group is critical. I think we may have had a couple extremely talented qb's on our bench. One of them may have transferred out already. Bo Nix is just, potentially, a short term fix. We need a coach who can identify talent, develop talent and use it productively. This goes across the board with our offensive coaching group. With the last offensive coaching group we recruited well, but then that was the end of it. We had mediocre qb play, never saw any development, at least on the field. It is time to see excellent coaching of the position groups. That is the biggest question I want to see layed to rest, can we recruit and develop offensive weapons again?

Mario championed toughness and physicality along with predictability. The toughness and physicality are actually ok, it was the predictability that bothered me. Toughness and physicality redefined might be appropriate, but those traits are an integral part of any football team. It would seem Lanning wants the physicality to include overpowering with size and strength. Seeing more of that at the line of scrimmage would be a welcome change. I would love to see the opponents running game shut down at the line of scrimmage. Toughness being defined as able to withstand adversity is another element I would like to see. If the team suffers multiple turnovers, or injuries, they need to show the esprit de corps to win every game expected and rise up to do the unexpected. Repetition on offense may be ok, but execution is critical. We also need to see innovation, the unexpected. One area I am excited about again is special teams. The special teams coach is going to be a huge upgrade. Shutting down the opponents before they start and exploiting transitions in possessions will hopefully be fun again! Innovation on offense can look like any number of schemes. I just want to see the opponents confused, maybe even in awe again. We need to become must see tv again!

My skepticism comes from one statistic which both Riley and Lanning will have to address if each program is to rise to the championship level. Oregon ranked 111th and USC ranked 126th in penalties yardage last season. Georgia ranked #21 while playing big boy football. Riley's team ranked 77th. Interestingly Alabama ranked pretty high last season and lost the title to Georgia which had a more disciplined program. I think this will be an interesting stat to watch to see if Riley can gain control of a program that has had a pretty high talent level for many years. The problem has been the discipline and execution of plays. It has also been developing a team of players rather than just a group of amazing players. This is going to be job one of Riley at sc. It twill also be an important job for Lanning. Who will turn these programs around first.

Interesting article, and makes a good case for Riley out of the gate, but longterm, I am not too sure.

I wish it was an embarrassment to Arizona's program, players, fans and alumni. I know it would be at Oregon. Fortunately we wouldn't tolerate this type of behavior.

Great points and it makes the case that Oregon is an offensive machine, if allowed to thrive. For some reason Oregon has produced some amazing offenses over multiple coaches and schemes. It will be exciting to see what the next coach and OC bring to this amazing history. One item is we have always had dynamic qb's and I hope to see that developed again. The string of OC's who created the offenses has been amazing, but our ability to develop qb's has been our strength too. Who is going to be the next great qb, and OC is going to be a compelling story going forward!

Oregon has definitely produced some excellent talent on the hardwood. Kevin Love and Danny Ainge probably could have had the largest impacts, but went elsewhere. Ainge not signing on at Oregon may have caused Harter to move on. Go Dana!

I think Oregon has proven to be harder to recruit too, but not impossible. This difficulty has either been looked upon as an excuse or a challenge. Fortunately we have another coach and staff who look upon the difficulty as a challenge. That challenge has the full support of the alumni. As Dan stated he now needs the complete support of the fanbase. If all those things come together so will the recruits and the program. A simple formula and certainly not an insurmountable challenge. Rise up fanbase and support Dan, staff and the program! Go Ducks!

I think it is quite shrewd for an athlete to ask the question who benefits from me wearing this product. That question has so many answers it is important for all to at least consider. From who grew, produced the product to how it was made, to who may be making money on this purchase. Not being aware, making a thoughtful choice just allows you to be unknowingly manipulated. Nike benefits from athletes wearing their product. They pay the universities big dollars so their athletes wear their logo. An athlete expecting a little cut of that isn't so much selfish as just being a smart, thinking consumer. Now expecting massive payouts, that would be selfish and not grounded in reality for most student athletes. To say it is selfish, I think, is naive to what is going on with the whole meaning of the NIL acronym. These athletes are a large part of Oregon's Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) as they compete as football players. I personally choose to try and not wear labels. I don't like to be defined by a product, or have anyone label as a Patagonia, Nike guy. I like to buy specific products because of the type of material and look, and often choose that to not have a label. Some may want the label, the exact jersey, I am not that guy. To each his own. I can agree the student athlete should be focused on being a student and an athlete. Focusing on making money, and being a professional would seem to make an already difficult situation untenable. Hopefully Oregon can be a school where a student athlete can be just that while feeling they aren't being taken advantage of. Students athletes who play high level football who are too broke to enjoy college isn't just. It will be interesting to see how this all develops over the coming years.

The year they peaked, the top ten hit was 'Unbelievable' by EMF. A decade later it was rated one of the top one hit wonders ever. Both of these items defined that time for the dawgs.

Tough one to compare or really grade and fairly contrast other situations. I suppose one could look at Jordan James, Jahlil Florence Justius Lowe and Dave Luli and pull some inferences from those recruiting battles. Number one Dan Lanning came late to the game in recruiting for the Ducks and did pretty well, but we need some perspective. Mario was a continuation of slick so he wasn't starting from scratch while beginning his coaching stint at Oregon. This means simply comparing their first years isn't valid for comparing ratings straight across. One can look at how Lanning continued to do well in head to head against sc, much like Mario did, well done. He also gave us a focus on keeping Oregon kids home, also kudos. Both pretty impressive accomplishments from a guy who has been all the way across the country. With Jordan James he showed he can bring talent across the country from his ties to Georgia. This isn't something we got out of Mario. He brought a few guys from Florida in 2019, but it wasn't like we hired a guy who brought the talent from the south. Coach Lanning seems to indicate he might be able to bring a little more talent from the south, it will be interesting to watch that. James was a guy all the top programs in the south recruited and wanted. With Dave Luli Coach Lanning went head to head with Mario and did something he could never do. Mario couldn't break the Washington code for recruiting. Coach Lanning showed he could recruit to the north, well done. It seems Lanning has strengths Mario never showed. I think Lanning is showing he can get the guys he wants, with little impact on who else is recruiting, Mario included. I give him a solid A for the job he did. I think there is the potential to see an A+ soon with the signals I saw come through with this class. There is definitely more there than merely looking at numbers and simple math.

Actually probably not a good idea, but does remind me of one of my favorite Saturday Night Live skits, 'meet your second wife.' If you want a good laugh, and enjoy that stuff, it hits the spot.
