Oregon DC Chris Hampton lays out expectations for spring game defense

“I just want to see us go out there and play fast," Oregon defensive coordinator Chris Hampton said on Monday. "Go out there and play fast, play physical, play the way that we've been coached to play. Don't do anything crazy, anything that you didn’t do in practice. You know, don't do it now, because there's a crowd out there."

The crowd should help elevate the intensity for the Ducks, who have played a handful of closed scrimmages thus far this spring. Oregon has a great reputation for fan turnout at spring games, routinely filling Autzen Stadium and bringing in 30,000-50,000 patrons for the event. While this level of attendance can bring out some of the beneficial nerves for players and get them used to the eyes being on them, it can also bring out some of the fun of the day.

"You want to see guys go out there and just play fast, play physical, and honestly, have fun," Hampton said. "You know, this game is fun, and we talk about that, and we want the guys to go out there and enjoy the moment and embrace it.”

Even with a new coordinator, the Ducks are looking to ‘install the Oregon offense’

Just as defenses adapt to keep up with offensive trends, playcallers on the other side of the ball must also evolve to stay one step ahead. Oregon's new offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer is well aware of this fact, but — along with the Ducks' entire coaching staff — understands the importance of continuity.

"It really started from the beginning since we've been here, we wanted to install the Oregon offense," Lanning said. "Even going back when Kenny [Dillingham] was here, we developed a system. Coach Mehringer has been here for the entire thing, and then we wanted to add wrinkles, adjust, adapt, and build."

That consistency is why Lanning has been so keen to promote internally when positions open on his staff. He is proud of his ability to develop coaches — having sent coordinators Will Stein and Tosh Lupoi to head coaching positions this offseason — and knows the benefit that it provides his players. Because Mehringer has been in-house, this is just a continuation of the system already in place on the offensive side of the ball.

"Our system has a lot of answers. It has a lot of tools," Lanning said. "This offseason, we're going to add new things that we haven't done in the past, and build off that, and build to our players' skill sets."

Predicting the Oregon Ducks' starting offense after the end of spring practices

Spring practices are in the books for the Ducks after Oregon wrapped up it's Spring game last weekend. Heading into 2026, the expectations are National Championship or bust as Dan Lanning brings back a ton of talent to supplement some exciting additions via the Transfer Portal. Plenty of eyes will be on the Oregon offense this season as Dante Moore looks to become QB1 in the loaded 2027 NFL Draft class.

Aside from Dante Moore, this unit has a ton to be excited about with the pieces around Dante Moore. The cast of weapons is deep as Oregon should be able to rotate at receiver and running back to keep everyone fresh for the entire year. The concern may be getting the offensive line to gel after the NFL Draft took key pieces from the unit, but the talent is all there.

Predicting the Oregon Ducks' starting defense after the end of spring practices

The Oregon Ducks head into the 2026 college football season with serious National Championship or bust expectations. Dan Lanning and the Ducks are earning high praise in the Way-Too-Early Power Rankings, and for good reason, as this roster is loaded with talent. While the offense with Dante Moore will get a ton of attention, the defense could be just as strong.

Dan Lanning and the staff did a great job with player retention, returning two potential 1st round picks to the defensive line. Along with the other returning exciting pieces, the splashes in the Transfer Portal make this a potential elite defense.

Dan Lanning has Oregon’s past, present, future aligned ahead of Year 5

The Oregon Ducks' spring game is always a special event.

After a long, rainy offseason in Eugene, the final weekend in April offers fans an opportunity to get back inside Autzen Stadium, typically enjoy a sunny afternoon, and watch their favorite team display the new iteration of the roster, often featuring returning stars and intriguing new pieces.

This past year's spring game felt different. It felt bigger. It felt as if, after four years of working to craft his vision, head coach Dan Lanning finally put the pieces together just right.

On Saturday, April 25, we saw the past, present, and future in congruence at Oregon.
