Oregon Coach Dan Lanning Pushes Back on Dylan Raiola Scrutiny, Praise

Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning opens up on the scrutiny and the praise of quarterback Dylan Raiola, and as far as at practice, the now-healthy Raiola has "thrown some dimes."

Under scrutiny, sometimes words can be taken out of context, for example a short quote at media day went viral for fans thinking he took a shot at Nebraska, but in reality his 18-minute long interview showed his patience, humility and dedication.

Raiola's true freshman season put him on the map. He started immediately for the Cornhuskers in the tough Big Ten and made a statement impact. He finished with 2,819 yards, leading all FBS freshmen and setting Nebraska’s freshman passing record. He also helped Nebraska reach its first bowl game since 2016.

Raiola was still able to complete 72 percent of his passes during his sophomore season in 2025, despite poor protection and a season-ending injury.

It's always hard for true freshmen to earn starting roles out of the gate given how much of the system they need to learn, and the fact that they often need to continue physically developing. Offensive lineman Tommy Tofi showed up in the Spring, and instantly looked the part, making every fan hopeful of their potential impact. When Summer rolled around, the staff got to see top-10 recruit Immanuel Iheanacho in action, and now the offensive line picture may be becoming clearer.

As the duo of freshmen is beginning to make an impression this Summer, A'lique Terry is praising the duo for doing all the little things the right way.

"Speaking to Manny and Tommy, they’ve come out hitting the ground running. They’re both, like I said earlier in spring, they’re both physically gifted. Manny’s obviously behind a little bit just because he didn’t get here until later, but you can see the physical specimen they are. They love the game. They’re constantly with each other. They’re constantly trying to get more, constantly getting with Coach (Ryan) Walk and the law firm and making sure they get some extra meetings and getting that kind of stuff in now because they know their role could end up being much larger later on down the year. Depending on as much as they put in, it could happen maybe earlier in the year. Who knows? But they’ve done a tremendous job with the amount we’ve thrown at them on purpose, and they’ve done a good job absorbing it, taking it on, asking the whole law firm for questions, and not being afraid to ask questions. I think young guys tend to be afraid to ask questions at times. They’re not in that stage right now."

If Davison is dealing with a serious injury, that's news to him, as he'd just witnessed the sophomore running back complete a strong day of work. 

"I'm not sure what information was talked about or said, but I know that kid just practiced his butt off," Samples said in response to a question about the reports earlier in the day. "He had a really good day of practice today. He finished runs. He's continuing to get his body in shape. He's a really hard-worker. He works hard on and off the field, and he's continuing to become a leader every single day."

Kawika Rogers - Guard

The Oregon Ducks are still trying to solidify the offensive line rotation, and the left guard position remains up for grabs. Fifth Year Senior Kawika Rogers is the leader for the starting job, but the veteran is being pushed by a freshman. True Freshman Tommy Tofi was one of the stars of the Spring, and he's continued to impress this Fall, giving him a chance to jump into the starting lineup.

Michael Bennett III - Tackle

Oregon could've added more via the Transfer Portal to build the offensive line, but Michael Bennett III was the lone addition, joining the Big Ten from the Ivy League. While Bennett has experience, giving him the inside track to a starting role, it's hard not to look over your shoulder when a top 10 recruit arrives on campus. Immanuel Iheanacho has received a ton of early praise, and with his talent level, the Ducks could deploy him early in the season.

Ify Obidegwu - Cornerback

Every cornerback aside from Brandon Finney Jr got exposed in the College Football Playoff loss, and Ify Obidegwu allowed 3 catches on 5 targets in just 15 coverage snaps as Indiana targeted him. This offseason, Oregon has an elite room of defensive backs, and if Ify Obidegwu can't take a step forward, he could get knocked out of the starting role. The Ducks have signed elite backs in Na'eem Offord and Dorian Brew who could easily take a massive leap in year two.

Aaron Flowers - Safety

Oregon has made a tradition out of signing 5-star safeties, and with Koi Perich transferring in, one starting role is already filled. Aaron Flowers should be the starter once again, but with the talent behind him, he can't get too comfortable. Former 5-stars Trey McNutt and Jett Washington have all the skills needed, and they could end up changing everyone's expectations.
