So the U is back, interesting use of the term back, to a soccer stadium, they have never played in, twice as far away from campus than their adopted stadium, Hardrock Stadium, to make sure they fill it up. I'm just glad we have a campus where World Class Track and Field, Soccer, Baseball and Softball can occur along with a Spring Football game on the same day. Just happy to be a Duck fan living the dream!

I have been calling out this attribute since the day he took over. I would add there is a bit of Columbo in him too. He can disarm you with his humbleness, but he is razor sharp. He seems laid back, but he has boundless energy. The growth mindset is a critical component of his personality, but it isn't because he lacks self assuredness. Mario came across as the most confident leader we have had. The problem was when things got busy he couldn't handle it. I have a feeling we will be seeing the opposite in Coach Lanning. A growth mindset isn't a weakness, even in the heat of the battle. This article nails a key element of what makes Coach Lanning a great coach. We shouldn't see this as a weakness in his knowledge or ability to lead. A growth mindset is critical for a coach who can adjust to the personal on the team. It is also important for a team which wants to be able to fail and get better. Time will tell how good Coach Lanning will become. At least we know his ceiling isn't going to be viewed at the first game. The decisions he makes in one game won't become a pattern which is incredibly hard for him to change. We are fortunate we have a Columbo with a growth mindset.

The Georgia fans also seem to see Coach Lanning as kind of a Chip Kelly type coach. A coach they thought might have something special just below the head coach. We were fortunate to land him before he took over somewhere else. I still remember Bellotti stepping away when he still had plenty left in the tank, but saw the writing on the wall. It seems we lost our way after the ascension of Chip Kelly. I suppose even Chip Kelly wasn't the whole package, Lanning seems to be. At least let's hope he is! One thing which seems to be in Coach Lanning's favor is he doesn't have the arrogance of CK. Lanning seems to be as humble and curious as the day he started coaching. That will serve him well as he moves through these first few years.

The 'walk-on' coach, love that guy. It almost seems like all these coaches have a walk-on attitude. We are back to the underdog mentality that I love and can relate with! I'll add, what a deal, makes less than Mastro and is exactly the coach I wanted to see at the position. Seems like we went from coaches with little more than pedigree to a set of coaches with the progeny of our previous great coaches. Coaches with passion, but humble and all about the game, love it. I will love it even after a loss, because I know it will be left on the field, and there won't be coach speak for excuses!

If you are talking about the University of Spoiled Children, then they may be exactly the type to pursue. They will fit right in with the culture Riley inherited, and may not change.

Some of the former players were on the keep it in the family side of things. Agree they came off as looking like they were from a part of the country where you keep your sisters close and your cousins closer. I do wonder where they sit now that he is reaching out to alumni and former players. I can't see Joey legacy ever going completely down the drain, by the way, the guy is, and always will be, an Oregon Legend.

I want to know who doesn't like Dan Lanning? Who doesn't respect his football IQ? What recruit said I would never play for this guy? Is there anyone out there who doesn't like the guy? Seriously, what coach said no I am not going to leave the NFL and coach for you in a smallish town in Oregon? It seems like every recruit he contacts at least puts him on their list. I haven't heard anyone say he was too young, too inexperienced to be the DC at Georgia. This seems to also confirm he hasn't reached his level of incompetence. It would seem he hasn't even come close to that level when no one seems to see him faltering in his abilities, nor, more importantly does anyone question his integrity. I almost expect him to hit a phone booth and head off to solve even more difficult problems in his time away from the program and family. Oh yea, Joey wasn't buying Dan when they first met, I wonder what Joey is saying now?

It did seem like Mario wasn't too focused on the walk-ons and PWO's, and it is nice to see the regained focus on this critical part of the program. Every team needs the Rudy type players to push the elite athletes to perform. Every once in a while you get a diamond in the rough who the recruiting services didn't properly evaluate. I love the seemingly renewed focus on the PWO and walk-ons. I also give Mario Kudos for this move.

I do sympathize with his intention to supposedly redshirt, but the staff wouldn't let him. Not sure how it all played out, but it is nice that whole mess is behind all of us. I am pretty sure the list is based on who has the nicest house, not the best coach. I could be proven wrong, but that is my analysis of the list. The second article is on the coaches when you scroll down. Agree the article on some of the position battles is interesting too.

I will say one of the toughest things to do is predict the season ahead when no games have been played. Let me correct that, one of the toughest things to do is predict the season ahead and be right.The beauty though is, he will be right for almost 5 months.

One item we must remember about our previous two coaches and the enthusiasm they created was they were salesmen. Dan Lanning is also arguably a great salesman too. With a salesman we have to be careful as they know how to sell you on what you are looking for. Fortunately I agree Mr. Lanning is proving he is more than a salesman, which was undoubtedly the strongest aspect of the two previous coaches. The question still is out there, is Mr. Lanning selling us on more than he can deliver early on. We seem to be buying into every positive sign he gives us. We must remember our job isn't just to buy, but to hold accountable for what our program is and needs to become again. Fortunately Charles and FishDuck have proven to be up to that task. I look forward to the journey of finding out who Mr. Lanning is and seeing him bring back our Oregon Football Program and at some point even improving on what we view as the golden years of the Oregon Program. I look for a renaissance or renewal with the Oregon Football Program and Mr. Lanning becoming the leader of this movement for the fans and players, and really the nation taking note of Oregon again!

Remember the honeymoon is in Atlanta and the most expensive wedding in Oregon Football History is taking place as we speak. The wedding is where everyone dresses nice, the food is free, drinks often too, and the speeches are all planned out. The honeymoon is where the game is consummated and we begin to know what we got. The fantasy begins to end and the reality sets in. We also must remember that if we are comparing Lanning to The Saban, Nick lost a lot of games early on. He was competitive, but he had a learning curve we seem to be skipping in our assessment of who Lanning is right now. We can't expect the wedding to continue as the real deal is happening before us. I do remember seeing many honeymooners on my vacations, sometimes they didn't look too good, not often, but the honeymoon sometimes begins with expectations which aren't met. The four/two minute drill sounds amazing, especially with the goal Lanning has. I think part of the problem is we had a previous coach who seemed to think special team just happened, and being strategic was having your strength coach next to you on the sideline. Hearing a coach is actually planning and practicing these critical areas is astounding, but it is what the successful coaches do to help themselves as they go into real game time. Real game time is different though, as anyone who has had kids, or ran a business knows. All the planning goes out the door and you learn on the run while learning if you have it. So what we have here is clearly the extended wedding period where we are living a fantasy. Some of that fantasy will continue, especially when you compare it to our past coaching staff. The fantasy though will end when Lanning's gambles don't pay off, injuries happen, and the oblong ball bounces the wrong way, the drinks won't be free anymore. I hope we can just appreciate Dan Lanning becoming the coach we, hopefully, will have for a long time. That coach won't be Saban and he just might be like Tom Osborne who won a lot of games and only won the big one at the end of his career. Before that the Nebraska program became a program to emulate. They were extremely loyal and supportive. While we are still learning about the Lanning era we should try and imitate that program. Lets keep our dreams in check and make sure, most importantly, we support our young coach on his path to greatness.

Another thing I think he is speaking to is if you don't have the right attitude you can be replaced. Coach Lanning wants his attitude on the field and just because you were a starter or are talented doesn't mean you will play. Which players can adhere to what Coach Lanning wants to see in his players, freshman or seniors. It might be harder for a senior to adjust to?

Interesting you mention the Poly culture as encouragement, yet it seems there seems to be a very strict way of giving encouragement. Encouragement from what I know is earned and often kept just out of reach in Poly culture. Children aren't given massive amounts of stimulation of how well they are doing, not a lot of participation trophies given out. There is an emphasis on respect of elders and always striving to be their best. When I think of a winning culture I do think of the Poly culture because they do tend to obey the coach, something sometimes missing in other kids. There is also an amazing work ethic and believing in family and team. I agree there are few cultures as strong and amazing as the Poly culture, especially for football. How do you define the encouragement in the Poly culture?

If you read into what Lanning talks about it is all about having a growth mindset. You aren't great, you are what you put towards your weaknesses and how strong your strengths become. Most players have only heard about how good they already are and a fixed mindset is instilled. They think I am good enough and deserve to start based on my talent level right now. Lanning is trying to develop a culture of where there is a thirst to get better, hear about what they can improve on, not just hearing coaches stroke egos. The problem with that is most kids have just heard about how good they are. Some are even afraid to address any weaknesses they may have, doesn't jibe with what they have been told their whole lives. They have no flaws and deserve only the best. They may like to practice, but only on their position and do what they are good at. We may even see some of our superstars leave because of this attitude. The other problem with a culture is their is usually a hierarchy based on the age of the athletes. If the seniors don't have the mindset of a winner, then the whole program suffers. Hopefully this is one of the reasons they brought Bo in. A team needs a strong top down attitude within the team of players. What is acceptable and what isn't starts with the coaches, but only works if the senior players buy in. I am sure Dan is very cognizant of this and wonder what he has done to address this issue. This then extends to the next generation of players, unless they didn't understand what it took for these seniors to achieve what they did. OSU basketball is a perfect example of that going sideways. Helfrich's teams also lost Marcus and many players who understood what it took, and suffered. Each year needs to build on the last and sometimes it takes a special player to truly instill this, who might that be? It will be a tall task for Lanning and staff to truly instill the culture they want. There is a set culture already from Mario and as many have said it isn't the most solid cultures. He may have to take some kids out when effort falters against EWU in the second week. He needs to see players taking no downs off. It will be critical he sets this mentality early and often. That will be one thing to watch for as the culture grows. How does he handle the EWU game and does he have destroyers or guys who just want to get along.

Wow, this was a major buzz kill, glad you weren't in the dressing room before the wedding! Now this is the guy we need in the dressing room to make sure our guy doesn't leave out the back door. Agree, I'm pretty sure Nike's stock price will jump after all the gear being bought!
