NCAA changes replay timing protocol after Michigan's controversial win vs. Western MichiganUnder the new standardized protocol, the Broncos would have pulled off the upset of Michigan last week In the wake of Michigan's controversial win over Western Michigan in Week 1, the NCAA has established a standardized protocol for timekeeping. According to ESPN, NCAA national coordinator of officials Ron Snodgrass sent out a memo regarding a "standard timing protocol that ensures consistency in the administration of all college football games." The policy mandates that the clock embedded in the broadcast feed serve as the official clock for replay reviews. "The official time for all college football games is the time displayed on the in-stadium game clock," Snodgrass said in the memo. "When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed. This timing protocol should be followed consistently at all institutions and game sites." On Saturday night, the game appeared to be over as Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood sailed a Hail Mary pass out the back of the end zone. The clock on the NBC broadcast displayed zero when a Western Michigan defender touched the ball out of bounds. However, upon reviewing, Big Ten officials determined that there was one second remaining. The Ducks are going to need to do a better job of staying ahead of the sticks, and making the later downs easier, and part of that may be running the ball more. Both 4th down plays looked to be schemed up well, and with better execution this week, the Ducks' offense should stay on the field longer. Others might tell us more about how we consume college football than about what the Ducks actually are.One of the things that happens after a game turns out a little differently than expected - win or lose - is that we tend to become reactionary. We saw it almost immediately after Oregon’s 34-27 win over Boise State. There were national conversations moving the Ducks from one of the best teams in the country to something closer to a playoff question mark, as though four quarters in early September had suddenly revealed everything we needed to know about the next three months. Perhaps some of those concerns will prove to be correct. Oregon certainly gave us enough Saturday to make the questions legitimate. The offensive line did not consistently look like the finished product the Ducks will eventually need, the defense did not create the early havoc we expected, and 10 penalties made a game Oregon controlled statistically much more difficult than it needed to be.
