What Dana Altman Has Been Missing With the Oregon Ducks This Season

The Oregon Ducks are currently the second-to-worst team in the Big Ten Conference with a 3-13 record in conference play and a 10-17 overall record.

The Oregon Ducks' struggles throughout the 2025-26 season can be directly correlated to the lack of ball-handling and offensive leadership at the lead guard spot.

Without junior guard Jackson Shelstad on the floor, the flow under coach Dana Altman has looked all out of sorts.

Oregon Adds Major Transfer Haul And Two Elite Freshmen As Dana Altman Reloads For 2026–27

Oregon men’s basketball has added eight Division I transfers and two top freshmen for 2026–27, giving Dana Altman one of his deepest and most talented rosters yet.

Oregon men’s basketball has assembled one of the nation’s deepest and most intriguing rosters for the 2026–27 season, adding a wave of Division I transfers and two highly regarded freshmen as head coach Dana Altman prepares for a new campaign.

The Ducks bring in eight transfers — Dwayne Aristode (Arizona), Taylor Bol Bowen (Alabama), Pharaoh Compton (San Diego State), Jerry Easter II (USC), Jasper Johnson (Kentucky), Andrew Meadow (Boise State), Fred Payne (Boston College) and Tyrone Riley IV (San Francisco) — along with five‑star freshman Tajh Ariza and three‑star guard Seven Spurlock. The group joins returners Sean Stewart, Luke Johnson and Rian Gonzales, giving Oregon one of its most balanced and versatile rosters in recent years.

Oregon basketball looking to hire front-office style staffer amid changing college sports landscape
Oregon men’s basketball has opened a search for a new staff position that reflects the growing front-office demands of player development, recruiting and portal management.

Oregon men's basketball appears to be taking another step into the sport's new front-office era.

The Ducks have posted an opening for a Director of Player Development, Recruiting and External Relations, a newly created role that reflects how quickly the demands around roster building have changed in college athletics. The title is not general manager, but many of the duties attached to it mirror the kind of work more programs are carving out in an effort to keep up with the transfer portal, NIL and the growing complexity of roster management.

According to Oregon's job posting, the position will be responsible for several major areas within the program, including player development and student-athlete experience, monitoring and evaluating players in the NCAA Transfer Portal, alumni and donor relations, and scouting, game preparation and film review.

Oregon Ducks named sleeper team in the Big Ten next season

The revamped roster led to CBS Sports analyst Jon Rothstein picking the Ducks as his preseason sleeper heading into next season — with Altman serving as a significant reason.

"Dana Altman didn't forget how to coach," Rothstein said. "He was ruptured by injuries last year. I think Oregon is a team with this personnel, with Dana Altman, that will find its way back into the NCAA Tournament."

Looks like you can watch to see if Jon is correct next season for $199. It’s insane you can get season tickets for less than $200. The program needs a massive turnaround next season.

Ducks come in 12th in Jon Rothstein's Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings

All signs point towards a bounce back season for the Oregon Ducks men's basketball program in 2026-27, as a revamped roster built through the transfer portal will look to stay above water in the Big Ten and compete for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Earlier this week, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein tabbed the Ducks as his sleeper candidate in the Big Ten. Now, he's released his full power rankings entering the 2026-27 season, with Oregon slotting in at No. 12. They come in just behind the Iowa Hawkeyes and ahead of the Maryland Terrapins.

Last season, eight teams in the conference made the 2026 NCAA Tournament. But with the expanded 76-team field that is expected to favor power conference teams, the Ducks very well could be on the fringe of making the tournament.
