Media Day Sets Stage For Start Of Fall Camp

Oregon coach Dan Lanning and many of his players met with local media Monday, two days before opening preseason practice.

At the western edge of Oregon's athletics facilities north of campus rises the football program's new indoor practice facility, the skeleton of which looms over passing cars and pedestrians. Construction continues on the project, just as it does on the football program that will eventually inhabit it.

Work on the 2026 football team began with winter conditioning and progressed through spring practice. Summer workouts further cemented the program's culture, and Wednesday the Ducks will look to build on that foundation when fall practices begin in the shadow of the new indoor facility.

Oregon football's annual media day has come and gone, and Wednesday officially marks the first day of fall practice.

In total, 35 Duck football players were made available over a two-hour period of time. Many of these interviews will be turned into full content items (some already have been), but Erik Skopil and Matt Prehm have also decided to unload the notebook, giving little glimpses into the interviews that may not become stories but were fun anecdotes regardless.

Scott, you're the go to since FishDuck's ( now discussOBD Duck) site is the WWII bomb crater it currently is.

Your site is excellent, and I haven't seen any Duck centric site come close to your editorial skills.

I am not sold on him. He has huge shoes to replace as a transfer at safety and I'm not sure he is a clutch a player.

So I'm not taking it easy on him unless he is a level above Thieneman. I don't think he has the same kind of closing speed or ball hawk skills.

We will see what happens.

Thank you both so much for your kind words. I appreciate it more than you know. A passion for stories, themes, and sometimes data keeps me engaged and I enjoy being able to take one small part of my younger days dreams and continue chasing them in a fashion that keeps me as close to my childhood roots as possible.

There will be five more articles today. Two on the free side and three premium. I won't have the time to post or promote them as much today; I have to travel to Central Oregon and back and have a meeting with my Portland staff after I get back so it will be a late day.

DANTE MOORE’S OREGON IS BEING BUILT ON TRUST

The Ducks’ quarterback believes in the staff, the process and the teammates around him, and that trust has become central to the way he approaches the 2026 season.

Dante Moore had opportunities to reconsider his future after Oregon’s 2025 season ended.

He could have entered the NFL draft. He could have decided he had already accomplished enough in Eugene. Instead, Moore chose to return for another season with the Ducks.

There were still moments when he wondered whether he had made the right choice.

“There were some days where I thought about that, like, was it the right decision?” Moore said.

Those questions faded as the offseason work accumulated.

“It’s been months now, and we put in so much this offseason, making sure we’re getting our bodies right, preparing for this season,” Moore said. “So I’m excited.”

WEDNESDAY WAR ROOM: FIVE QUESTIONS OREGON BEGINS ANSWERING IN FALL CAMP

The Ducks enter camp with an experienced roster, but important roles at tight end, safety and special teams remain open while two new coordinators begin shaping their units.

Oregon does not enter fall camp needing to prove that it has talent.

The Ducks return established players on both sides of the ball, added experienced transfers and watched several young contributors gain significant experience last season. The next few weeks are about determining how those pieces fit together and which players are ready to take on larger roles.

Dan Lanning offered a straightforward definition of a successful camp.

“For us, it’s improvement,” Lanning said. “Are guys making the same mistakes twice? Do they understand the concepts that we’re trying to institute? Do our coaches really get comfortable in the roles that they’re wearing?”

The first questioner put words in Koi’s mouth saying he “obviously” would prefer to skip Oregon and go straight to the Vikings.

He laughed that off, and in the rest of the interview, he reiterated that he loves Oregon—the team, coaches, and state.

I think, if he were a mercenary, he would be playing for Lincoln Riley.

And it says a lot that he wasn’t interested in taking pictures on his official visit and instead wanted to talk football.

I’m really looking forward to seeing him play.

Sir, you are a great teacher, but I'm happy I only audit your classes. You are too tough a grader for this sorry student.

So, Professor, to be the real deal, Koi has to go in the 1st round of the draft and no higher than the 24th pick? Whew! 😁

Seriously, my friend, I have some of the same concerns. However, he did improve on D from 2024 to 25: 2024 46 tackles, 28 solo; 2025 82 tackles, 39 solo, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble.

In two seasons, he had 813 kickoff return yards, a 23.2-yard average. He had 306 yards in punt returns, 9.4 average in 2024, and 6.6 in 2025, when special teams coaches were paying more attention.

I thought we would see him in the return game in the spring, but I don't recall him lining up to return kicks. Was this because Dan wanted to keep him under wraps? I hope so.

With apologies to Bobby Darin, one thing I don't want to see is another Makhi back in town. 🤪

We'll know early on if he's the real deal. In the opener, if he is starting, he'll be going against an experienced, savvy QB in Boise State's Maddux Madsen. In Week 2, the guy who led FBS in passing yards in 2025, Drew Mestemaker, will be at QB for OK State.

We are in a time of unregulated free agency in college football, and players are understandably making hay while the sun shines. I welcome any player Dan and friends believe is worthy to the OBD Football Finishing School.

I'm happy Dillon Gabriel made Oregon his third stop, and Pregnon and Thieneman came to play where the grass is damn green, and that Evan Stewart and Jamari Johnson will be on this year's roster.

Entering the portal and portal picking are an integral part of today's CFB Moneyball game.
