I coached soccer for close 20 years, despite the fact I never played in my youth (it wasn't available in Oregon, when I was young.) I had the privilege of working with a former NCAA, US and World Cup level referee the first couple seasons, and later was allowed to work under two great coaches who had professional experience playing for Scotland and Wales. I learned there was a lot more to that game than the vast majority of Americans will ever comprehend. So far, this has been a fun WC.

I sort of grew up around horse racing because my grandparents lived a few miles from a track. For years, watching the triple crown was as much or more important to my Dad's family than college football (except when the Beavs were playing... Dad played DL for them leading up to WWII). Hockey was actually #1 in that house.

The season with the "academic fraud/extra benefits" penalties completely derailed what seemed very promising with the random way multiple key Duck players were were suspended at various times of the season. Oregon didn't have the roster to overcome the constant change in those days.
