It comes down to too many variables, (track, academics, football) and too many player's in the decision process to be able to make a decent prediction. I will say the mom, and the girlfriend may be the silent power players. Rational calculations should be thrown out the door. If Oregon comes into play it will be a huge Nike opportunity. Nike has promoted Bo, the other Bo, and Michael along with Tiger like no other brand. If Nike pitches Harbor with Oregon that could be the clincher for us.

I think it is time to realize the youth basketball development programs are good at advancing and identifying talent, but aren't serving college basketball well. Much like going to the bar to find your next wife, plenty of talent, but the players are there for the wrong reasons. If you're really trying to build something meaningful find out who is working on their game in pickup games, and at their local gym. Who still loves the game and wants to be part of a team, and who just looks good, but will end up just causing you a headache, while providing little meaningful outcomes.

Who is calling the defense, well if it was Lanning then there were problems. I would say it was Lanning too many times, and not enough. When you have two DC's and the Head Coach has to step in, there are issues. Excuses can be made, but we now have the guys we want, and another shot at a functional coaching staff. The only problem is some of the guys are young, but we should have enough buy-in. We just might not see the complete defense we want. It takes time and we still need on field leadership. That will be critical, somebody on the field as the general, or leaders. Last season I would say there were coaching issues on and off the field with the defense. The defense didn't perform and the athletes didn't improve. When you have a 5* getting more bench time as the season progresses, and then he transfers, there were issues. This season I want to see all guys improve, and the defensive coaching staff hummmmm. We shouldn't have to put guys on the field who can't perform. We also shouldn't have coaches on the sideline who can't develop, and run a defense gametime. I look for progress in player development and coaching development. Great ponder point Mr. Marsh, hopefully the guys getting paid for it are calling the plays this season. I also hope Lanning can just do his job, and smile while thinking about how he can incrementally improve all aspects, not take over anything.

A Brock Purdy beat Tyler Shough over and over, but Tyler is rated higher. Maybe you watch the tape and see what the kid brings to the field. I suppose it is easy to just ask the pundits what the measurables are? I hope we have recruited another qb who may not have all the measurables, but knows how to lead and win. Some can see the game, and it all slows down for them. We need to get back to recruiting all the traits of a winner, not just the measurables. I have confidence Lanning will bring that back.

Would be nice to see him be the foundation of the class. More likely this will just be his first soundbite, social media promotion, and a blip reflecting recruiting in the modern age.

I would add there players who are accelerants, those who are neutral, and then those who are decelerants to the culture and energy a team has. We want players who are accelerants to the culture Lanning is trying to create. Lanning is all about getting 1% better everyday. Some players look incredibly good, but they aren't willing to work on their weaknesses. They also aren't there when you need that extra effort. They have to be willing to say, after failure, so what, now what. I would say this mentality wasn't on the defensive side of the ball enough. I think this is another component of the Oregon Football Program I want to see thrive again. We don't blow leads, we finish games, and our players give everything to each other and the program they are able to. If you want an example of what we did wrong, the recruitment of Tyler Shough is the perfect example. We went after the player who looked great, had the measurables, but was more of a statue. The guy who beat him every time in high school, Brock Purdy, didn't measure up, but would have in the past. We need to recruit the Purdy's, who cares what the pundits thinks!

I hope Cam surprises some people while down at South Beach. The young man deserves some luck and maybe the warm weather will help. I will be rooting for him to make all conference, and move on to the NFL!

Agree about getting to the playoffs, but winning it will take depth, development, recruiting, and scheme. The depth is where the Championship is won. TCU couldn't even stop the 3rd string RB for Georgia. At this point getting to the playoffs isn't a goal I want to see the program aim for. The program needs to aim for winning it and threatening to win every year. I think this is where the portal will be the difference maker. Any spot we have weakness we can bring in a transfer. I have a feeling Lanning is also striving for depth and knows this will make the ultimate difference.

Interesting development, talk about a 24/7 job keeping track of all the players available and the program needs ability to take on players.

Bosa is a liability, plain and simple. He wouldn't be in a Charger uniform next season if I was the coach.

Does raise the question what percentage of his rise was the O-line, Coaching, Scheme, Natural Talent, or other? If you have to break it up to make 100%, Talent 45, Coaching 20, O-line 25, Scheme 10? Bucky was a 3* amongst 5* and 4* talent on that list. Gore was a 3*, but it could be argued that didn't give his genes enough respect. How does a 3* rise up to that level? Is it nature, nurture, or just the heart in the guy no one could measure?

He is certainly another piece in Lanning plan for the program. The young man also seems like he is a football player, who loves the game. Kind of a crazy topic, but when you adopt a child there can be both bonding and attachment issues. This can happen with your own children but it is much rarer. Basically if a child doesn't bond or create an attachment to the parents there are issues which arise. I would argue Lanning had attachment issues with some of the old guard. The bonding necessary to create a team of young men willing to run through walls wasn't there. What Brayden Platt could signify is another step towards a team of players who are all in for the Oregon Football Program under Dan Lanning.

Gambling on a 1st round NFL qb, and a large guaranteed contract is a crap shoot. Signing a high school kid, and giving him a ton of money is playing roulette, probably Russian roulette. I like Oregon's direction, show you can set up a qb for success who has potential. This is the same direction we have gone with coaches and we have had great success. All it will take is one program having success with the big payout to a high school kid and the rest will follow them off the cliff. I hope Oregon never goes that route. I do look forward to more transparency of what is going on, someday. For now we can only guess, and watch what is happening.

As a head coach, the hiring and managing of coaches is also critical to a programs performance. He hit it out of the park with many of his hires, and seems to have a good culture amongst most coaches. The problem I see is the defense, and some in game decision making. There has been much discussion about the adjustments with the defense, and that needs to get cleaned up. It is puzzling also how Noah seemed to digress. I want to see improvement in how the defense adjusts to playing Penix and the beavs next year. I also think Lanning is a coach who allows his coordinators a long leash. My take it in his second year he will need to tighten the leash so his guys don't get out of control with their play calling and player development. As a new coach he is still figuring out how Lanning does things. As stated he is a Kirby Smart protege, but in the end will become something a bit different. We still don't know what that will be, but I imagine there will be growth and adjustments to how he does things.

Excellence with humility is something our qb's have had for a while. I can imagine one of the reasons Johnny Football thought about coming to Oregon, but decided to go elsewhere. He wouldn't have fit in. Nix fits in, Ty has a chance because he has some of the same traits. The new guy seems to have a bit of it. Time will tell who will keep the tradition going.

USC fans upset,

We have almost always had the O from Oregon, but it would seem we are starting to get the D back from the Duck too. Burch had a choice to either play one more year or go pro. He decided to play one more year under Lanning and Co. Welcome and here is to you becoming a 1st round draft choice, and the Ducks turning into a first rate defense! Well done Dan Lanning and everyone involved, now bring in the speed!
