Great take, and wonderful writing, but I would add it isn't just the story which will change lives, it is the individual who takes the time to care about a troubled youth. Like Spencer Webb, it just took his brother taking him in and giving him guidance, and love. I am sure there were plenty of people along the way who impacted Spencer, and he impacted others, but the lesson is to really listen and care for those in you life. I would bet Colt never had that anchor relationship, just disfunction surrounding what could have been an exceptional life. There is tragedy in both lives, but so much good was on the way for Spencer and those around him, truly sad.

The article makes me want to know more about the players and the people they are. Too often we are so focused on the athlete part of the young men and women who are part of the Athletic Department. What is their 40 time, how much can they lift, how high can they jump. They are all real people with struggles and accomplishments on and off the field. From the bio section through the related articles about the players it is all football. I think the Athletic Department could differentiate themselves if they made each student athlete a real person. What did they do in high school, how many siblings, passions, hobbies. We have some amazing student athletes, who are people too.

I have a good feeling about our chances on continuing to upgrade our D-line. I think Tosh is going to pay dividends with bringing in some elite D-line talent. If history is any guide Tosh knows how to recruit D-lineman and finish the recruitment. I

Actually Dont'e Thorton was averaging a touchdown every other catch and massive yards per catch. He still played little, but this year we can see if he is the real deal, or just had a couple great catches. Some guys are just players too. Maehl was brought in to play DB, but he proved to be too good as a WR. Hopefully we will see more guys see the field and better understand the guys who just have it. Once that is known, keep them on the field! Bassa seemed like one of those guys last year too. I think it will be hard to keep him off the field.

Agree a program needs to both recruit and develop at all positions. This staff seems to be bringing in a deeply talented group of players, while filling voids left by the previous staff with transfers. Also how can you pass up on a Christian Gonzalez when he becomes available. If an NFL talent enters the transfer portal you pick him up, even if he is a senior. I do think the transfer portal is something to be careful about as far as character guys. You only bring in guys with high character who are team players. The culture of the team is the number one factor, not how many 5* players you can load the program with. I also think if our early schedule was softer we may not have brought in Nix. Starting our season, on the road, against Georgia, Lanning was left with no good options other than bringing in Nix. A rookie start against the National Champs has a huge downside. Putting Nix in and having him struggle then just leads to a nice transition to Ty against EWU. I think the Nix transfer was a very shrewd move. Nix has a tough test, and then we move forward with him or with one of our guys. I agree, going forward, the program needs to continue to be very strategic with it's transfers. Bring in high character guys who have proven themselves to be more than an amazing individual on the field. Are they going to elevate the program like DJ Johnson has or just be another bump on the bench. The transfer portal is here to stay, but going forward I look for Coach Lanning to work it like a champ.

Tragic, is all I can say. It does speak to the story behind all our student athletes, most of the time, we have no idea about. What an amazing young man, and such a sad ending. Hopefully the team can rally around, and play with a purpose for Spencer's life. Great reporting and writing by Canzano, and gives us much to ponder as we go through our day today. I wish I was half the man it sounds like Spencer was on his way to becoming! The Football Program and Athletic Department helps develop so many amazing young people. I suppose that is one thing this highlights, on the positive side.

And he had, arguably, the greatest college and professional qb in history at his disposal. He better bring in 5* talent, or you won't even be seeing a 3* team.

I hope every player is projected as a higher draft pick post season as compared to preseason. I also hope every coach is considered for a better job. My last hope would be they all stay together to win another Naty!

The next game, always! You focus on the next opponent, and forget about the last. A Lanning team needs to be engaged in improving each week, and playing it's best it can against the next opponent. None of this we defeated X so we don't need to worry about Y. Also none of 'the refs lost the game for us.' Take the refs out of each and every game, dominate. Let the second string compete, and learn to dominate in game situations. The most important game may be when the team doesn't think about the next game, stops trying to improve. When this happens they will all learn a lesson on how important it is to stay focused on oneself, and forget about what others say, and others do, just get it done. The reason no one can predict why a game is going to be the most important is because no one knows when the mental gap is going to happen. If the team stays focused and improves, each game just become more important, none are the most important, until the end, but even that game is an opportunity to improve and execute even better.

Another item is the OSU beaver fans would love to see us lose every game. Oregon fans, mostly, don't care to see the beavs lose until they play The Ducks. We probably wouldn't care if the Washington dawgs won some games, but then they just get so full of themselves so we pretty much want them to lose all their games. We have a lot of respect for the Utah program, and their coach. We definitely want them to beat Florida. We can agree on that game. I actually just want to see Oregon play a great effort game with integrity against Georgia. A clean hard fought win or loss is fine with me. I feel like we will see Lanning's first stamp on the program and seeing clean, smart, effort is what I want to see again. Noah Sewell is the player to watch. He just flat out knows how to play football the way football was meant to be played, enjoy. Winning against tosu was sweet, but the team wasn't ready to run the schedule. I doubt this team is mature enough either so a loss might do us good. I will take a win too, but won't be able to watch the game so just be a good game!

And that's the best thing, there's no grey area. So with this job, I know exactly kind of what he wants, and his vision is for this program, and let me know when things are good and bad. Not arguing Berkley is a fun place to live as a college student, but after graduating the average student is homeless, or stuck renting. I'm just using 'bestcollegereviews' own criteria, and wondering what's up. The typical home value of homes in Berkeley is $1,718,898. The typical home value of homes in Eugene is $488,642. I suppose we just see things differently. I wouldn't want to live any part of my life in a city. To each his own, respectfully disagree.

Here is the criteria, and it is suppose to be a website which students, parents refer to when picking a school. "There are a lot of things that have to click to make a truly great college town. Whether it's feeling the palpable vibe of an alma mater, having tons to do, or the fact that your college town is a great place to stay after you've graduated, we've worked to provide you with a quality list of the best college towns in the nation." Not sure how anywhere in the Bay Area with it's prices is a good place to stay after you have graduated, but every website has a way of measuring how to make money, I suppose.

If all we are basing this on is what we know so far, he is at the top of the list. Come game time we will be able to judge better. I will also say the only reason Chip is even on the list is because he coached at Oregon. He is middle of the pac at best, certainly not ahead of Shaw at Stanford. I also give Rickert more respect than they do. He beat the dawgs in the Apple Cup and took over a dumpster fire and won some games. I mean has a an even record and was in every game last year. CK has a losing record in the middle of a recruiting hotbed while sc was terrible. What he should have done is put Whittingham at the top and Lanning as the guy with the chance to take over the Pac-10. Shaw as the top of the mediocre group of coaches, with Rickert as the dark horse to make some noise. Deboer may be a good coach, but he has to take over the dawgs, quite the disadvantage. Wilcox is also mediocre and very happy to be that way!

Chip is just another assistant, head coach, who left Oregon thinking he was all that and a bag of chips, and floundered. It is time for Oregon to realize the opportunity to coach at Oregon is an extremely good opportunity for a multitude of reasons. I think Dan Lanning may be the first coach who truly appreciates this, and hopefully this awareness continues. I am grateful for what Chip brought to Oregon and the time he was here. He should be too, and realize he was very lucky.

Can they, yes, will they, probably, did they last year, no. Our deep threats were like a group of sprinters who trained to do the 100 meter dash, but then never ran the race last year. To ask the question again is almost frustrating to hear. Of course they can run the 100 meter dash, let them! If not then.......drinking and smoking on Saturdays are on tap.

Bruin football hasn't been anything other than a history lesson, much like the dawgs. The last time they were relevant was under Terry Donahue who retired in the 90's. This was way before most recruits parents were aware of football. As has been stated, the money will go, mostly, to pay down the AD's debt. Much like anybody and anything, you have to be careful when all you are doing is chasing money, it doesn't often end well. Where CK will end up is probably some high school job in NH. That is if what he says is true. I kind of think he likes the money and fame LA affords him, even though he says he just wants to coach football.

Oregon Track and Field, going back to it's roots, distance running. I hope he also continues to focus on the speed events, and fosters the connection to the football team. Bringing in multi-sport athletes helps all sports!

The pressure is on, and will be mounting for everyone. Nix, Butterfield, Thompson, Dilly, Lanning and soon enough Moore. I think it is safe to say Nix had better take over this season, and put up numbers which will get him at least into the discussion about getting drafted. He has one season to get it right, or one of these guys will be taking over or taking over somewhere else. What is amazing is each of the coaches are a blank slate and the prospects and fans are all in on them. Nix has come to resurrect what was suppose to be, the rest are waiting for what can be. My caution is when there is so much hope, there is often disappointment. Can Dilly, and really Lanning take what is massive expectations and move fans, recruits and players to an acceptable reality? Expectations are wonderful, they lead to goals, effort, and excitement. Managing expectations is where the tricky part is. Each of these guys, really the whole team is just a bundle of expectations until the season starts. The main question is, what will the reality be, and will that be acceptable to the recruits, fans and players?
