Reports: Oregon baseball set to hire San Diego's Matt Florer as new pitching coach

After a few weeks of looking, Oregon baseball is expected to hire Matt Florer as its new pitching coach for the 2026 season.

Sounds like a great hire...

“Since arriving to San Diego in 2019, Florer has helped guide the Toreros to the most wins and highest winning percentage of any team in the West Coast Conference. In eight seasons within the WCC, Florer has developed seven All-American pitchers as well as twelve All-Conference pitchers.”

Led by one of the nation’s premier pitching staffs, San Diego ranked in the top 25 of every major pitching category (Earned Run Average, WHIP, Hits Allowed Per Nine Innings, Strikeouts Per Nine Innings, Walks Allowed Per Nine Innings, Strikeout-To-Walk Ratio, and Shutouts). The 2024 Toreros’ 41-15 (20-4 WCC) overall record was the 15th best winning percentage of any program in the country.

Three of Florer’s pitchers went on to earn National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All American Honors in 2024: Conner Thurman (First Team), Austin Smith (Third Team), and Logan Reddemann (Freshman/Second Team). To tag along with these All-American accolades, Thurman was recognized as a finalist for the 2024 NCBWA Stopper of the Year, Smith was named a finalist for the 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year, and Reddemann earned the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year award.

During the 2024 MLB Draft, three of Florer’s pitchers were picked up by professional organizations. Josh Randall became the highest selected collegiate pitcher from the state of California when he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the third round (85th overall pick). With Randall’s selection, Florer has helped develop California’s highest-drafted collegiate pitcher in two of the last three MLB draft classes (2022-2024). Additionally, Drake Frize was later selected in the 17th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Ivran Romero signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Twins.”

The five Oregon Ducks that were selected within the twenty rounds of the 2025 MLB Draft are tied for the second most in the college baseball program's history (2024, 2023, 2015, 2013 are the others). The record of six players was drafted in the 2011 MLB Draft

Oregon baseball opens season ranked inside Top 25 of coaches poll

February is here, so naturally, college baseball is right around the corner.

The Oregon Ducks baseball has a promising season ahead of it as coach Mark Wasikowski and his staff try to once again help the program reach the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., in June. The other baseball coaches from around the country seem to think the Ducks have a decent shot at reaching Omaha as Oregon begins the season ranked 23rd in the first USA TODAY Coaches poll of the season.

The poll is somehow missing its share of Big Ten Conference teams. Besides the Ducks, UCLA at all the way at No. 2, is the only other Big Ten team in the initial poll.

Oregon will start the season with an eight-game homestand at PK Park. The Ducks host George Mason for a four-game series, including a doubleheader on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. The next weekend, Oregon hosts Youngstown State in a four-game set that begins on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Last season, the Ducks were close, but yet so far away, to making it to the CWS as they finished the year 42-16 in the regular season before being bounced out of the NCAA Regionals. Oregon was stunned after losing to Utah Valley and Cal Poly.

Oregon In Line To Host Regional; What's At Stake vs. UCLA This Weekend

D1Baseball released its latest batch of projections for the NCAA Tournament field. Oregon earned the 16th and final top seed to host a regional round in the projected field. That provides some assurance that the Ducks are headed in the right direction, but there is still some work to do.

Oregon's projected regional includes Boston College as the No. 2 seed, Kentucky as the No. 3 seed and Saint Joseph's as the No. 4 seed. The Ducks hosted a regional last season as the No. 12 overall seed, but they were stunningly upset by Utah Valley and Cal Poly, going winless in the postseason on their own

field.

Taking down UCLA, ranked No. 1 in the RPI rankings, would provide a huge boost to Oregon's chances at hosting. Winning the series, or even winning one game, would greatly benefit the Ducks.

However, if the Ducks get swept, the odds of securing a regional at home will be bleak. The Ducks will host USC at home for their final series of the regular season, which would also provide a decent boost to Oregon's RPI ranking if they can claim the series, but if the Ducks fail to get the job done in Los Angeles, they will be playing more for their Big Ten tournament positioning rather than worrying about a regional

Laya transferring would be a head scratcher in the pre-NIL era. One year getting a big chunk of change at a CWS contender then off to the MLB draft. It will be interesting to see where he lands. It stinks but it's the college sports world today

This, and the departures from the men's basketball team, make Dan Lanning's never losing a starter to the portal even more remarkable.

In the college sports world, 'tampering' today has the same meaning as 'commitment.' Unless you're North Dakota State and nailed by the NCAA for tampering.

The NCAA was so mad at Ole Miss and Miami for tampering that it sanctioned the Bison. (RIP Tark.)

Ok, what the h*!! is going on? Is this an NIL thing or something else? Lauaki has a no contact tag, so he probably knows where he is transferring to, but sheesh!

This is really disappointing to see two freshmen that would have anchored next season's lineup just go poof!

Why Oregon baseball is suffering from the transfer portal

A HS pitcher in the state of Oregon was offered 50K NIL and a car. He verbaled to sign with Tennessee for a car and for 175K.

We do not have the NIL funds for the highest level of college baseball. We have enough to be in the top 15 as we are, but not a CWS team at this time, it appears.

Players come here to blow up, and get stats...and get paid elsewhere...

Donors who love baseball needs to step up for more NIL funds specifically directed towards baseball. This off-season has been a killer, proves if we want to be successful retaining top players, something needs to change.

Oregon baseball assistant coach Jack Marder departs for Texas

The Oregon Ducks baseball program continues to take a hit this offseason. While star players have left in the transfer portal for opportunities within the SEC, members of the coaching staff are not far behind.

Oregon hitting coach Jack Marder is leaving the program to join the Texas Longhorns as a recruiting coordinator, according to D1Baseball's Kendall Rogers. Marder spent seven seasons on the Ducks' coaching staff under Mark Wasikowski. He also played for the Ducks in 2010 and 2011.
