Sad State of Duck Basketball, Only Three Players on NBA Rosters

I watched last nights exhibition game vs Utah. I thought they showed some improvement since the Seattle game.

They have some capable players, Jasper Johnson, Bol Bowen, Taj Ariza, Ty Riley IV, Aristode, Meadow can all score.

Bowen looks like a pretty good rim protector, and Meadow can score through contact.

I think if they can figure out how to play together they can have a decent season. Rebounding and ball security need to be a focus,

but I like their athleticism. I'm cautiously optimistic.

What NIL resources does the basketball team have? My guess is that many other schools have devoted more to basketball than us, and we have put it pretty much all into football. Football is king, both for fan enthusiasm and income.

Available information puts Oregon’s NIL budget for hoops around $12M. The top teams in the BIG are north of $20M, so pretty hard to be competitive with that budget.

The biggest challenge is they don’t have a high level PG on the roster or a Center. Those are two huge issues. Agree that they have some good players, but if you can’t run the offense or rebound, you are going to have some serious problems in conference play.

Payne is an average PG. He has decent handles, but doesn’t shoot it or pass it particularly well. Lin and Easter look to be the backups at that position. I would argue that neither are DI PGs. Lin is more of a SG and Easter looks like he needs a ton of development before he is a major contributor.

Compton and Bowen both look very good, but they are going to be giving up size at Center in most conference games. Can Bowen consistently box out guys that are 7 feet and 240 lbs?

IMO, the floor is 6 wins this year, similar to the 1991-1992 squad. The ceiling looks to be middle of the pack in the BIG.

I’ll add that if Tony can somehow manage to get this team above 0.500 this year, that would be an amazing coaching job and he might have a shot at the permanent position.
