MBB: Coverage of Men's Basketball Program (4)
I watched that game and it was UGLY. It’s probably going to be a VERY long year. On a positive note, Compton looks like a good player. That was one of the few bright spots last night. Rebounding is going to be a major issue due to size and shooting from distance will once again be a concern this year.

Oregon - Nebraska Pre-Game Reports, Interviews, etc.
The 3 Oregon WRs who could step into a pivotal role with Evan Stewart's injuryThe 3 Ducks wide receivers who could start if Evan Stewart's sidelinedJalen Lott - Freshman2026 Stats: 1 catch for 6 yards There was incredible preseason hype for Oregon 5 star signee Jalen Lott, even with the fact that he was a late enrollee. The hype for Lott was slowed due to the fact that he needed hand surgery, but he finally debuted last weekend with a catch for 6 yards. Now that Lott is healthy enough to play, Dan Lanning and the staff may look to see what he can do in an expanded role, with the offense looking for answers. Iverson Hooks - UAB Transfer2026 stats: 1 catch for 6 yards Given all of the talent that Oregon had coming back at wide receiver, the Ducks didn't need to go out and add any via the Transfer Portal, but the staff still added UAB star Iverson Hooks. Coming off a 927 yard season, Hooks was expected to make a big impact to the point that he was named to the preseason Biletnikoff Award watchlist. Hooks hasn't had much of a chance to prove himself this season, but if Stewart is ruled out, he could finally start to push for playing time. Gatlin Bair - Freshman2026 stats: 3 catches for 25 yards Dan Lanning and his staff signed Gatlin Bair as a 5-star recruit out of High School, but he often flies under the radar due to the fact that he took a year off to serve a mission. The Ducks have gotten glimpses of Bair's ability in the Portland State game, but as the injuries continue to pile up, Bair is slowly moving up the rotation. Given the fact that Bair missed a year away from football, getting him more reps will only help him regain the form that made him such a highly sought after recruit. Mel Kiper's Draft Board
He matriculated in 2023, so pursuant to the NCAA 5-and-5 eligibility rules, he has another year if he wants to use it. It's the Class of 2022 athletes who are seeking another year of eligibility.

What Are Lanning's Options On Offense Moving Forward?
I do hope that DL is actively reaching out and finding an outside consultant to help with the offense. I just don't believe there's enough coaching talent/experience on that side of the ball to fix it themselves right now.

Dante Moore is Out for Nebraska
I don't think that is possible. I saw quite a bit of the Nebraska game last week. This could be the best team the Ducks have played so far this season.

What Are Lanning's Options On Offense Moving Forward?
I think the best option on offense is to change the plays. The are stale. Defenses have them all figured out. Start with some misdirection plays. Let A. Smith get in and do some zone reads.

I Have a Gut Feeling What the Problem Is
The last two playoff losses and the two losses this season - it felt like the other team knew what Oregon was going to do and how to exploit the Ducks. The USC game was an exception to this theory. I am guessing that the Ducks are too predictable. The opposing defense can give a certain look to force Oregon to audible and then they know what Oregon is going to do. Oregon is falling for this from up and coming coaches previously from the lower ranks who had to figure out how to do more with less to get wins. I think Dan Lanning figured it out and he is upset that he learned that others know more about college football than he does. I also think the Ducks will get up to speed on this quickly. I also don't think that Koi Perich and the O line are horrible. They are just getting burned. Once the 'fix' is put in (whatever that is), things should look like normal Oregon football again. I have a very hard time believing that Lanning whiffed on evaluating Perich and his O line with all the coaching experience he has. I believe that this all came about because Lanning has such a young coaching staff. Lanning is fixing the defense. The offense is harder to fix because there are no real experts in Eugene for that purpose. Dan Lanning needs an offensive partner to help him coach. Yes, a real partner. An equal, not in title, but in expertise. Having assistants who are learning on the job is not getting it done.

Tony Petitti, From Sitting in the Corner to the Smartest Guy in the Room - Looks Like 24 is Near
Its good for the teams and fan bases outside the Power 2. Hopefully, programs won't start pulling the NBA and MLB move that scratch players on short notice any given week ( to rest players "for the sake of the season"). That is the biggest concern for me. I certainly hope this ends expansion forever. Lord knows football is nothing like March Madness.

34-17 Nebraska 0 turnovers 1 sack 200 yards passing I am putting my money where my mouth is on this one. I live in Vegas. One caveat-every single time I have bet against OBD (and yes I took USC), I have lost. Every single time. So let's hope I am wrong. Let's hope my pick is and Epic demonstration of flawed analysis.

What Are Lanning's Options On Offense Moving Forward?
I have no problem with the disagreement. And I actually agree with your thought process. I just don't have a problem with a 6-3 result against a team I didn't (and still don't believe ) would defeat us no matter the result. It took 7 turnovers, an abysmal performance by every key position on offense that matters (OL and QB), no sign of adjustments until it was too late for that very outcome to emerge. Do you know the statistical impossibility of those very things happening in order for that 2 point miss to even be a remote possibility much even a possibility of a loss? The decision was immaterial in my estimation. UNLESS I thought UCLA was actually going to score points. Not one person on this entire planet took into consideration the game could have been a 6-3 result. Or 9-3 since we scored another 3 points. After all, the defense pretty much pitched a shutout. UCLA only scored because of OBD offense. Think about it. UCLA won this game by 2 points despite forcing 7 turnovers. Did you really think OBD were going to score 6 points all game going into the 4th quarter? If you did, then I believe every one on the planet would expect the Ducks to lose because teams just don't win games scoring 6 points. Even with the best of of defenses. It's why Michigan looks so lousy. 7 points wasn't going to change the outcome given the myriad of concerns you mentioned. And 7 points was how it was looking no matter what UCLA did. In other words, 2 points or 1 point wasn't really the issue in this game or for the season. There are a multitude of issues far greater than a 2 point conversion (that wasn't a guarantee we win the game anyway. It only assured a tie at best). We are criticizing the very characteristics that not only defines Dan Lanning, it resulted in his success. How many games has he lost versus won making decisions like that? He beat one of the best teams ever to grace a college football field making multiple decisions like that. So much so I happen to believe Ryan Day tanked the Michigan game so he wouldn't have to face OBD 3 times in one season. I can't prove it because Day would never admit it like Lanning did after another gamble of his that game: taking the penalty. And that's the gist of it. Lanning will probably never field a team with 2022/2023 Georgia or 2024 Ohio State caliber talent. He's 2-3 against elite teams. All of whom had better talent than OBD - potential and performance wise. Lanning's challenge is to overcome an apparent flaw he didn't see ( and neither did we): a coaching staff beneath the level of the very elite he has to face. His decision making is fine. His talent base is not. He is calibrating his risk taking. He needs a full contingent of talent before we can honestly say he makes poor decisions. Outside of his decision making to field such a team.

- Dilly-Dilly in the Trenches: Power-Gap Football Is Oregon’s Blueprint for a Revival
I don't know if it has been discussed here in detail? I think in the end the refs got the call right, the umpire spotting the ball just simply never corrects the original mistake. I just rewatched the whole sequence. The ref announces it is half the distance to the goal. Ball is placed at the 1.5. The end of the run appears to be at about the one. Ducks start to line up. Refs stop the game and correct the call saying it was from the end of the run. UCLA coach starts to argue. Ball is picked up. After hearing the correction, umpire comes back and spots the ball where it was originally incorrectly spotted. Oregon tries to line up fast for a second time but Lanning comes out and starts arguing. He eventually seems happy. The rules guy on tv comes on and agrees it is half the distance from the end of the run, not the 1.5. Ball has still not been moved from the 1.5 yard line. Oregon finally lines up and snaps it. No one on Oregon seems to notice. My guess is Lanning thought he was getting the correct spot and assumed it was being moved, but is never is, and the Ducks just snap it. GoDucks.com lists the officials for the game in their summary, and the umpire spotting the ball is listed (according to RefMetrics.com) as having refereed just 17 career college games in 3 and 1/2 seasons (and in the funny little coincidences department for those enjoy such things, the umpire is from the state of Ohio). It could be fairly questioned how after all the arguing, delay, and clear announcement of how to assess the penalty, that the umpire kept putting the ball back in the incorrect spot. I mean, if you are confused, you have 7 other refs out there to check with. - Dilly-Dilly in the Trenches: Power-Gap Football Is Oregon’s Blueprint for a Revival
