Dan's losses so far have been to teams finishing AP number #1, #1 #1,#1, #2, #2, #8, and #17. Those two close losses to number #8 and #17 were that first season after Nix took a shot to his leg late in game 10 that left him hobbled the rest of the season. Leaving out the Georgia disaster in the opener, Oregon's offense had averaged 46.6 points and 551.6 yards in 9 pre-Nix injury games, post-Nix injury it fell to 27.3 and 408.7 the final 3 games (and quite possibly no: Downs 4 plays, 8 yards, 1:41 Field Goal 4 plays, 8 yards, 0:35 on 11/12/2022). Dan Lanning just turned 40 like 3 months ago. When Cignetti turned 40 he was joining Chuck Amato's staff at NC State and going to work with a young Philip Rivers. When Saban turned 40 he was in the NFL and about 4 years away from taking his first major college HC job with Michigan State. Dabo was starting his first full year as HC at Clemson, 8 years away from his first NC, and Day in his first year as HC at tOSU, 6 years away from his first NC. In the history of college football, I only found 4 coaches that won a NC before 40, and only one in the last 50 years (Danny Ford Clemson in 1981). All four are in the College football Hall-of-Fame (Danny Ford, Bud Wilkinson, Knute Rockne, and Barry Switzer). Those 4 coaches had a career record of 529-129-18 (0.80%), and 10 National Championships. No NC yet for Dan, but 48-8 is (0.86%). He seems right on schedule.** ** Bob Stoops almost blows my little thing here about winning NC before 40 up, winning his first NC at Oklahoma at age 40 in 2000 and in his second season as head coach, but not quite 🙂 ** Don't quote me on all this I'm not 100% and got kinda tired of looking it all up, but am sort of confident in it 🙂

Chip Kelly took Tosh Lupoi to the woodshed. Chip still has a superior football mind regardless of some of the head coaching challenges. This year, outside of the catastrophic, its all on Lanning. We will truly see his coaching abilities. If he gets blown up for a 3rd time in the PO? Then what?

Can you direct me to a few past articles? I didn't read much at first cuz I was too disappointed. I agree this is a different team this year with a very high ceiling which I'm very excited about. Personally, I think evenly matched teams sometimes get the hot hand and like in baseball, lose 10-1 in the first game and come back and win 12-3 in the next game. I'm hoping this year is our game 2!

I cannot go into those games again…not anything related to you and your honest question, but due to MY issues and where my head is at this time. Those have been analyzed and discussed here extensively, and this is a different team in 2026—one that has the highest potential on both sides of the ball. I don’t want to go through the past negative again; I want to focus on the excitement of this team and the upcoming games. Perhaps others here can offer their perspectives…

Opinion: second loss to Ohio State - poor preparation by coaches, it appeared the Ducks staff expected a repeat of the earlier game and that Ohio State would not make adjustments on offense or defense. It's like the coaches only watched film of the first game. second loss to Indiana - the loss of Ducks running back experience has not received the attention it deserved, both for carries and blocking. Then, when the deficit reached 21-7, I think the whole team - offense and defense - panicked, including a befuddled coaching staff. both - playing from behind is apparently not Lanning's forte.

We are 3 weeks from Duck football! A new season is fast approaching and I've been wondering all this off season: What's the real reason for the last 2 seasons ending in such huge losses. 13 wins each season. Great recruiting. Exciting teams. Top rated offensive line 3 years in a row. More players drafted each year. No problems with the law( well, nothing too major). Three assistants to head coaches. All that, and then 2 major disappointments. What have I got to complain about?! So please help me understand, what is the reason for these 2nd time around thrashings. Is it coaching? Experience? Is it just one of those things?

Brayton Feister is a Rivals 4-Star, and visited Oregon three times, while he visited Penn State and Notre Dame twice, and USC, Michigan, Cal and Georgia once. This puts Oregon at No. 4 in the nation on the Rivals national ranking, just above Ohio State. We have 17 Blue-Chips verballed, which is pretty darn good. When we add a few portal transfers later--it will be another leading class!
