  2. Stats are fun to look at but until they take precedence over the score board Im goin with the win/loss record. Ive seen many games where the losing team had better stats than the winner.
  3. Two offensive plays in a row lead to two interceptions. Michigan plays Santa gifting Minnesota 10 points and handing them a 20-14 lead.
  4. Oregon has played 3 ranked teams. Thats a tough way to open a season. They have to have, by far, the toughest schedule to this point.
  5. Michigan is struggling with a struggling Minnesota team in a battle of who wants it less. Wolverines lead 14-13 in the 4th.
  6. Looking ahead after the Trojan-Huskie game... USC has Ohio St. and Indiana on their schedule. Washington has Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana and Oregon on their schedule. The Huskies have the tougher schedule ahead. I want both schools to have four conference losses. So I'm pulling for the dawgs. Yuk!
  7. I’ve wondered the same thing. With Chip, there really isn’t much question about whether he can coordinate an offense at the college level. What he did at Oregon helped change college football, and then he went to Ohio State and helped coordinate a national championship offense. Put that kind of experience with the talent Oregon has right now and it’s pretty hard not to wonder what the ceiling would be. That said, I’m trying to be fair to Drew Mehringer and Chris Hampton too. Both have shown flashes, and I understand why Lanning promoted guys he knows, trusts, and believes in. I actually respect the loyalty. My concern is more about the timing. This feels like a roster built to contend right now, and having both coordinator positions going through some growing pains at the same time feels like an awfully big gamble. And honestly, the offense isn’t even the side I’m most concerned about. They’re working in a new offensive line and don’t have nearly the same returning experience at some of the skill positions, yet we’ve still seen stretches where the offense looks very good. Statistically, the defense has been the much bigger disappointment, especially considering how much experience and talent is on that side of the ball. That’s the part that’s hardest for me to reconcile with the roster. Maybe the better approach would have been to promote one of them and make a national search for a proven coordinator on the other side. Give Mehringer his opportunity, for example, but bring in an established defensive play caller, or vice versa. There are a hundred different ways it could have been handled, so I don’t pretend there was one obvious answer. I just think trying to develop both coordinators at the same time, with this particular roster and these expectations, is a lot to ask. And while everybody is wondering what this offense would look like with Chip Kelly, I’m over here wondering what this defense would look like with somebody like Nick Aliotti calling it. 😂

  9. Michigan is looking pretty underwhelming against Minnesota. A red zone pick six saves them just before half 14-7. Wisconsin is taking it to the perpetually underwhelming MSU 17-3 at the half.
  10. Does make you wonder if this edition of OBD would be a more legit national title contender this year with CK engineering the offense.
  11. Watcha watching? Got UGA v. Randy on for a bit. Vandy just tied it up at 7 end of 1st quarter. UGA defense isn’t that much different than what I seen from Oregon last week. It is Vandy and Oregon played a top offense last week. UGA is more aggressive with pressures for sure. They play with with more intensity. Just more violent. If Dan can raise the standard in practice and Washington gets healthy who knows? Please figure out the safety play.
  12. Final score 2-0. Only score comes on a bad snap for a safety.
  13. This is not meant as a knock on Will Stein or our current coordinator, but I remember wishing we would hire Chip after Dillingham left. I am concerned about him vs our defense again. Congratulations to NW and their new stadium.
  14. Their new stadium looks amazing. And how awesome is it that it's exactly 100 years after the first field was commissioned, that they're playing their first game in the new stadium. I thought they played spectacular, and you can see Chip Kelly's influence shining. It's too bad he'll go on to suck at an NFL job next year. 🤣
  15. Fair enough, but just to clarify, I didn't personally tally and rank 138 teams. 😂 I posted the national rankings directly from CFBStats. That said, CFBStats actually has a “vs. FBS only” filter, which is probably the fairest way to do what you're suggesting because it removes FCS games for everyone, not just Portland State from Oregon. Under that filter, Oregon is #19 scoring offense, #98 rushing offense, #11 passing offense and #30 total offense. Defensively they're #93 in scoring defense, #70 rushing defense, #115 passing defense and #103 total defense. Category FBS-only average National rank Scoring Offense 35.3 #19 (CFB Stats) Rushing Offense 115.7 #98 (CFB Stats) Passing Offense 311.7 #11 (CFB Stats) Total Offense 427.3 #30 (CFB Stats) Scoring Defense 31.0 #93 (CFB Stats) Rushing Defense 150.0 #70 (CFB Stats) Passing Defense 274.7 #115 (CFB Stats) Total Defense 424.7 #103 (CFB Stats) So there you go. PSU removed, and thankfully I didn't have to spend my weekend rebuilding the national statistics database. 😆
  16. Changing the coordinators may have really upset the team in so many ways. Whether it improves or goes the other way is the big question. Given Lanning's talent with defenses you would think it should improve as the year progresses.
  17. Thank you, Mike, I always enjoy reading Charles and your educated thoughts. (Instead of my WAGS 🤪.) Is there a program or programs, out there today, running schemes you like on O and on D? WAG Warning: Boise State, OK State, Northwestern, Indiana? Is Georgia still using the MINT D? Has the game slowing down and analytics calling for more tries on 4th down impacted Os and Ds both? The HUNH has been replaced by using much more time between play calls. One reason Ohio State lost to Miami, the Buckeyes couldn't pick up the tempo and score points. Thanks again!
  18. I root for both every game---To Lose, However today I hope USC has the higher score at the end of the game.
  19. One team humiliates themselves today. The other merely delays the inevitable another week.
  20. Week Five in the BiG Michigan 0-1 at Minnesota 1-0 MSU 0-1 at Wisconsin 1-0 5 tOSU 1-0 at 14 Iowa 1-0 Maryland 0-1 at Nebraska 1-0 Purdue 01 at Illinois 0-1 Washington 01 at 18 USC 1-1 6 Indiana 1-0 at Rutgers 0-1 Friday Penn ST 0-2 13 NorthWestern 1-1 34
  21. I will be rooting for both teams to embarrass themselves
  22. How about when they play USC today at 4:30 Pacific in Memorial Coliseum? I think I have to cheer for UW today.
  23. Thanks to Mike West for the extended commentary. I was especially interested in the observation regarding the MINT. Further thoughts from this amateur observer, on the defensive side. They did play rather well against USC, considering that USC is a good offensive team with talent and clever schemes. The run defense was better. They got stops on third down. Our DBs rose to the occasion late with some timely pass breakups. And they did blitz a little. I wonder whether Washington's explosiveness would be better utilized in a gap penetration scheme. Someone posted an assessment from a trio of guys, one of whom is a coach named Eric. Thanks for that. He pointed out that Matayo actually did pretty well in setting the edge in the run game. Again, I wonder whether the scheme they are playing offers him the best chance to get sacks. Prehm and Skopil at Duck Territory are saying that the biggest disappointment has been with the safeties. One of our safeties is a thumper who has generally struggled in coverage. That should not surprise anyone. The unpleasant surprise has been Perich, who was supposed to an all-league quality player. Buried in the comments at ATQ was the statement that Hampton has tried to use him close to the line of scrimmage, as he did with Thienemann, and that is not working. According to that theory, Perich would be better as a deep safety focusing on coverage. This is possibly the biggest mystery about the defense to this point. Thoughts?
