Chip Kelly and Northwestern
I have to admit, I completely lost track of Chip after the Las Vegas Raiders fiasco. I know that there are some who still dislike how he left Oregon, and when I see highlights of those Duck teams....dang, what a show that was!! I am of the opinion that Chip caught lightening in a bottle with the group of players Oregon had at that time and how they incorporated into the system. He struggled to adapt past that at many of his stops. I bear him no ill will, Oregon certainly secured a center stage spot since Chip. It almost pains me to see him here now....but who knows, maybe Northwestern can become an offensive juggernaut.

SEC Coaches Whine.... But not Mine!!!!!
I have been loving the deserved bashing of the SEC on here. From the denial about the B1G surpassing it by winning the last three titles, to complaining about playing nine conference game. The threats to separate because now the ACC and Big 12 agree on the the 24 team playoff, over the 16 team model. People crying that the SEC will get punished with more 9-3 teams being left out, despite Alabama getting the benefit of the doubt every year when the committee could've put in Ohio State, Florida State, and Notre Dame over them. How many times did an SEC champion get left out? Heck, how many times did an SEC team get in without even winning the conference? But, I am proud to say that the Florida coach isn't making any excuses. He said he would never make excuses, and that his expectation is to always win. He won't cry about a nine game conference schedule, because if you want to be the best, you are going to have to beat the best. So I love calling the SEC on it's bull crap. Since when did we get so soft in the south? That's not the mentality I grew up with. Spurrier would call out anybody, and go for the win. Urban Meyer openly said his squad deserved a crack at the perceived unbeatable 2006 Buckeyes. No running, no hidden messages. Tim Tebow openly apologized for losing one game in 2008, he vowed that nobody would play harder, and nobody did for the rest of that year. But for some reason, we are meant to think the SEC deserves at least a quarter of every playoff bracket because our depth is the best. How stupid is that? If our top three teams can't make it to the championship, why would our even worse teams fare? That will be the last time I use the term is, as I hate that collective word. I will never be an SEC.... SEC...goof. If Oregon plays Georgia, LSU, or Alabama in the playoffs, I'm hoping Oregon does what I diana did to Alabama, or Ohio State did to Tennessee. I'm sick of this denial of truths. The SEC won seven straight titles, and I didn't hear anybody trying to deny who was the best. The B1G began to invest more into their programs, they got better. Now that everyone can pay for players, it's obvious the power has shifted. The SEC can cry and deny the truth, or they can look for ways to improve. I don't really care either way. I just want the whining to stop. I want the excuses to end, and I want to see the best teams play each other. I want an SEC/B1G scheduling agreement. END OF RANT. https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/jon-sumrall-isn-t-complain-190436187.html

College kickers are more chaotic... The best ones will take it without too much of a problem but the vast majority will not be automatic. Or just bump the starting position to the 50. I do kinda like the sudden death 2 point conversation exchange at the 3rd OT. Granted what I hate about it is that it can take a lot of time in transition as it's one play and flip sides... Repeat until winner. Annoying from a viewer experience as it's just one play. Give them 4 total plays from the 20 and see how it goes. I might have to write another article on better overtime formats.

I'm with you. That's why I noted using the NFL postseason rules, where each team gets possession. No coin toss, score, and you win the game without the opponent having a chance to score. The 40-yard line as the college starting spot is a good idea. Although with kickers routinely making 50 yard FGs today? Please, keep the articles coming.

I hate the NFL OT rules. College football falls into the shootout far more often than the NFL does and the NFL OT rules favor who wins the coin toss too much when that happens. Granted I'd be cool with backing the starting place up to the 40 yard line. Though I do prefer the college football OT rules to the NFL ones as both teams get a shot on offense and defense.

Terrific comment. But it comes out of rugby more than soccer. It's long been a rule in Australian Rules Football and is akin to a free kick in soccer. In the regular season, I'm all in favor of getting rid of overtime. And in the postseason, I'm in favor of adopting the NFL postseason OT rules. IMO, starting from the 25-yard line is chicken spit.

"....best of 5 FGs for each team to decide the game?" Nah, start at the 10 and keep backing up 5 yds with dual attempts until one opponent misses. Alex "Mongo" Karras of the Detroit Lions used to mimic them, calling out in falsetto: "I keeck a touchdown! I keeck a touchdown."

@David Marsh Thank you for the updates! I don’t understand the Fair Catch Kick. So we are addicting another special teams rule that allows teams not to actually have to play football? I know it will be rare, but this kind of stuff makes me crazy. This has soccer written all over it. What’s next? Maybe we can get rid of OT and go to a best of 5 FGs for each team to decide the game? 🤮

Interesting column in today's Register Guard...not behind a paywall...which provides the author's ten Oregon football individual player records unlikely to be broken. Not sure if any will never be broken because of game rule changes, but it is something to consider as we reflect on game/individual records. What was the context of rules at the time? For example, in 1989 the use of tee's on FG and Xpoint was discontinued. The Div I FG record is 67 yds...3 players share the record...all before 1989.

Texas Saying the Silent 'Cap-Space' Part Out Loud
As Texas coach Steve Sarkisian noted at SEC Media Days, college football is an unregulated multi-billion-dollar business. Hats off to Sark for not obfuscating; for recognizing today's world of college sports for what it is. The vast majority of college athletes are at a given program today for transactional reasons, not just for the love of U or State. Why is anyone surprised that, like the NFL, where players are paid, salary considerations are the principal part of roster management? How many NFL transfers stay with their current team because of loyalty to their team? That's a rhetorical question. Loyalty, fraternity, fidelity? Do players want this over being paid to perform? Every guy Texas let go to clear 'cap space' was signed by another program and continues to be paid. I doubt that these players, and their agents, took this as a personal affront. The Texas players now on the Oklahoma roster will have the chance for payback. If you want a uniform salary cap that is not ignored, like the House settlement cap is ignored, call the athletes what they are, 'employees,' and enter into a collective bargaining agreement with the athletes. The vestiges of 'tradition' need to go, including having a true FBS playoff and not a bowl extravaganza. This is happening at Texas, with the wealthiest athletic department in college sports. It also happened at Oregon, where the money was not available to retain many young DL players off to Alabama, Notre Dame, and other greener pastures. There is a silver lining. Salary cap issues are the reason the SEC lost its college football hegemony, and a program like Indiana can win a national championship.

Oregon Ducks Practice Reports Updates, Etc. “2026” (7)
Oregon edge coach outlines how Oregon's defense will create more havoc in 2026Earlier this week, ESPN's Bill Connelly identified a trio of areas in which the Ducks must excel in 2026 should a national-title-winning season be in the cards. Among them was creating more havoc. As Connelly outlined, the Ducks reached the College Football Playoff semifinals in 2025 in spite of having "the nation's 46th sack rate and 98th run stuff rate". Those figures are more in line with a mediocre defensive front than one capable of reaching the promised land. Newly-promoted edge coach Kamran Araghi won't dispute what Connelly and others have said about the defense this season. A season ago wasn't to standard, as he said on an upcoming episode of the Autzen Audibles podcast, and changing that has been an offseason focal point. https://247sports.com/college/oregon/article/oregon-edge-coach-outlines-how-oregons-defense-will-create-more-havoc-in-2026-288496556/
