And that minimum is equivalent to the number of non-conference home games it plays. So USC, with three non-conference home games this season (2022), must appear on the Pac-12 Networks at least three times. Meanwhile, ESPN and Fox want to select the best possible matchups — a process that’s not as simple as it seems. Interest in college football (i.e., ratings) typically peaks later in the season, when the best teams have emerged and conference title and playoff bids are at stake. As the networks contemplate whether to select the USC-Oregon State game in September (2022), they have to keep in mind what it means for their matchups in November. If the Trojans are as good as they look under Lincoln Riley, they will play a series of high-profile games down the stretch. Tex Tech went to Laramie a day early to adapt to altitude. Wyoming's coach said beforehand "well, the scientists tell me it takes about six weeks." Obviously a little gamesmanship, laugh. Wyoming's coach also said before he was at Laramie and he brought his visiting NDSU team, "we were gassed in the fourth quarter, and we lost to Wyoming late." Elevation in Lubbock is 3,200 feet. It is 7,200 in Laramie. It is 430 in Eugene. Elevations are always interesting to look at. We tend to think of someplace "in the desert" as being low elevation, but not always the case. Lubbock is higher than any Pac12 location except Utah and Colorado.

Six Ducks were drafted in the 2023 NFL draft of 259 players. All six which ranged from No. 17 pick to No. 257 made the 53-man rosters announced today. Plus, undrafted TJ Bass also made the 53-man at Dallas. Wonder how many times a program which have at least 6 players, and as low as No. 257, have had all their players stick on that first 53 cut?

My choice of clapping or booing is directly proportional to distance travelled by the opponent. The shorter the distance, the louder the boo. The longer the distance, the more sustained the clapping. Obviously I may have to adjust when tOSU arrives for that first Big Ten contest.

As one of the UO staffers commented a few days ago, the travel requirements for the Big Ten do not apply to all sports equally. Some, like basketball for men and women, will require several trips. Others, like golf, may require one trip per year, if that, because there is no home-and-home schedule in golf and they generally face other conference programs in tournaments at neutral sites. Some sports have no participation by Big Ten teams, and vice versa. Oregon, for example, has no wrestling team. The Big has no beach volleyball. And, so forth. Somewhat ironically, the Title IX requirements resulted in more women's sports which will mean there will likely be more travel required for women athletes than men as various colleges in both conferences have added women sports. There are more women's teams, than men's teams, due to the "equivalence" required by the size of a football roster. Finally, as was alluded when UCLA/USC joined, the B1G will look at ways to minimize travel by pairing teams geographically as was the case previously in the Pac12 (but not in the B1G). And, perhaps considering "tournament type play" at some sites. Yes, there will be travel longer distances, but it does not apply to every athlete in every sport.

I don't understand Mandel's comment. ESPN and Fox got what they wanted. They didn't want 4 of the 12 at that price point: $31M. They didn't want to pay $31M x 12, or x 10, if it included WSU and OSU, they wanted a discount below $31M. The fact they may pay that now is ok with them because they got the 8 teams they wanted. And, by slow walking it the $31M is less than they might have paid a year ago.

Nevada (Reno) announces QB coach Nate Costa has resigned. OC/TE coach Derek Sage will coach the quarterbacks. Nevada opens season Sept. 2 at USC. USC will have already played San Jose State the prior weekend. Costa was part of Ken Wilson's original Nevada staff and was working with the team for its second fall camp scrimmage over the weekend. This marked his first full-time FBS assistant job after serving on Oregon's staff for six years, including stints as a graduate assistant (2013-15) and offensive analyst (2019-21). He also worked at UCLA as an analyst in 2018 and at IMG Academy in 2017. Costa played for Oregon at quarterback from 2006-10 and was a captain of the Ducks during his senior season.

Arizona’s application for membership in the Big 12 played a key role in the process, according to a source. The Wildcats weren’t the only school to seek a lifeboat; Utah and ASU would follow them into the arms of the Big 12 (and Colorado, of course, had already jumped). But in an attempt to secure a home in case the Pac-12 collapsed, Arizona formally applied for membership in the Big 12 in the middle of the week — before Oregon and Washington rejected the Pac-12 grant-of-rights agreement on that fateful Friday morning. The Big Ten became aware of Arizona’s application to the Big 12, according to the source. “So (Big Ten commissioner) Tony Petitti tells his presidents, ‘We aren’t the ones,’” the source said. “They felt like they weren’t the ones to fire the kill shot.” That triggered the Big Ten presidents to approve membership for Washington and Oregon without guilt — and with Fox’s cash as their carrot, the source said. Arizona’s application was approved by the Big 12 on Thursday evening, according to a Yahoo report....before the Friday meeting" Me...Arizona could have backed out on the Big12. But, when you go so far as to apply for admission, and know there's approval, that appears unlikely to me. Another source said UW announced first that Friday morning, but I think that is a distinction with little difference as Oregon likely knew it was a two-fer before Huskies announced.

There is an old saying, "Envy is the enemy of honor." For many in the Beavis community it probably is also "envy is the enemy of happiness." No doubt, Beavis has quite a bit to worry about right now. Not only football and basketball, but how might realignment affect baseball which has been a touchstone of happiness from the W's that have eluded football and basketball. The Mt. West has 7 programs that play baseball. The Big West has 11, more competitive teams, and would be a better fit for the Beavs. Might it be possible in the future to have a structure for sports no longer tying everything to a "conference?" Along with the uncertainty over the future of Cal and Stanford, it is an unsettling time in Beaverville. It's akin to watching your handsome brother join the Homecoming Queen inside at the prom, while you park cars outside the country club. But, hating on your brother because it gives you temporary relief will not bring happiness. Still rationality goes out the window when you can't control your emotions. Personally, I don't like seeing Beavis in this quandary. I don't. But, life ain't always fair and attempting to detract from, or penalize, someone a step or two up the ladder isn't going to change the ladder. It's better to get control of your emotions and make the best situation possible for yourself where you are at.

I don't discount this was a bit of showmanship on Prime's part. He seems to be someone who might have a short temper over stupid penalties. And, fighting would fit that category.

(1) the incompetence of the Presidents/Chancellors in letting Commissioner K string them along for so long...real executives would not have allowed that, and as a result, at the end, 6 programs acted without reservation to save their hides, and 4 got screwed over. It should not have come to a life rafts moment. (2) ASU's late reluctance to leave. I would have thought they would have been on the first boat out.

Well, the whole BigTen schedule will have to be re-worked, again. Just a couple months ago they announced how they were going to integrate USC/UCLA with most teams having protected annual rivalries, but there was significant variation. All the way from Penn State with zero, to Iowa with three: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska. The latter never making much sense to either Iowa or Nebraska fans, though the first two are definitely Iowa rivals. I think it may be difficult now to have more than one each. Two at the absolute most. But, it may get a bit complicated if the B1G says the West Four will each play each other every year. Glad I don't have to be the one to figure out the scheduling.

My guess (who knows?) was Arizona. They were inclined to go to the Big12 anyway, and would be worried about any other school which might drag down the value of a $$ share each of the new members would receive. On the other hand, the Big12 was touting full shares for new members. But, I think that may have been conditional on no more than four adds?

Fish: It also comes down to exposure and availability to Oregon football, do I want it primarily streaming, or most on TV for now? Streaming, or the Fox Big-10 match of the week? Exactly correct. If the Pac members had accepted the purgatory of streaming on Apple, they would have been completely out of the conversation each season, and their value would have DROPPED even further before the next round of media contracts. For UO/UW it would have meant even smaller shares percentage wise if the B1G still wanted them. Further, for UO/UW to act now, it keeps the B1G from extending those slots to ACC teams. I really don't understand all the handwringing. UO/UW correctly saw the downsides of waiting. Act now, at a discount. Or wait, for an even bigger discount or no offer at all. And, during the interim, how many of us believe the Pac-12 is suddenly going to have a smarter commissioner and smarter presidents? And, UO's recruiting would sustain at a high level with a streamer? Or, that coaches wouldn't bail out for easier recruiting, better opportunities, elsewhere?

Fred, so you're saying we should only look at the Pac10 years. The Pac12 was not a happy time for USC. And, 12 seasons of it was sufficient time for some self-correction. Obviously they have a shot in 2023 to leave a bit better impression than they did in the prior 12. Do you have any comments on UCLA football? Seriously, do you have some analysis of what has happened? Last football title in 1998. Donahue was great.

Combined championships, men's basketball TOURNAMENT and football regular season in the 12-team era (since 2011-12): 7 - Oregon - 8 in regular season (4 football, 4 basketball) 5 - Arizona - 6 basketball regular season - UO/UA tied basketball regular season 2017 3 - UW - 4 in regular season 3 - Stanford 2 - Utah 1 - UCLA - 2 basketball regular season 1 - USC 1 - Colorado - 0 in regular season 1 - OSU - 0 in regular season 0 - ASU, Cal, WSU The one net difference between regular season and Tournament numbers was 2020 - there was no Tournament. UO/UW had 12 combined in regular season. USC/UCLA had 3. Why many of us were grumpy about the B1G plucking USC/UCLA a year ago as the "premier programs."

They should be equally as worried about Ohio State, Michigan and some other B1G's, if not more so. I do think there is still a DeAnthony Thomas effect in play. Not sure how much longer Oregon will be able to ride that. The answer is to have W-L success as the Thomas factor fades. Getting him was big at the time, but not sure most Ducks fans truly understood how big.
