Both men and women teams won the Big Ten Cross Country team titles this morning. Individual winners were both Ducks. Tex A&M was 11-2 last season. One of the 2 losses was 3-10 vs Miami. The game was 3-3 until Miami scored with just under 2 min remaining. So far this season A&M is 4-4. Three of the 4 remaining games are Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas. In two of the 4 losses they scored 6 points each. Four field goals in those two games. What happened? O-coord Collin Klein left to become head coach at Kansas State. D-coord Jay Bateman left to work as D-coord for Will Stein at Kentucky. A&M Coach Elko promoted his receivers coach to be O-coord. He hadn't been an O-coord before. Elko promoted a guy who had been a senior analyst to be D-coord. He had a small bit of co-coordinator experience in the ACC. Does all this sound familiar? Except A&M's returning starting QB is not injured. A&M was AP pre-season No. 8. Third in SEC rankings behind Georgia and Texas. As noted, they are 4-4 with a game vs S. Carolina coming this weekend. A&M is no longer ranked.

Looks like Oregon will have 3 WRs back who weren't "available" last weekend: Stewart, Hampton, Lott The two running backs listed for Northwestern have not been big contributors. Looking at team stats, it appears QB Chiles had taken every snap.

However this season ends, both Lanning and fans need to be really open minded about potential candidates to fill the job before Spring Practice, but also preferably before signing day. There are a lot of guys on and off the radar which have little notoriety who could get the Ducks back into the Stein/Dilly level at least. Who is sheparding a highly ranked offense this season? Consistent with last season? How much of it is a once-in-a-decade QB, or how much is it the O-coord? This morning I was reading about Seth Doege at Arizona (now 6-1). Not saying he should be THE Oregon target, but rather who are guys like him out there without getting locked into a familiar name like Locksley?

ADs also should expect that whomever is a coordinator can fill the Head job if necessary. Either short term in the event of accident/illness, or longer term if your Head guy bails out for NFL or another college job. Maybe either coordinator isn't the ideal, but they do serve as an insurance policy if necessary. ADs need to think about that.

Put Jorgy in the booth with Johnson. Jorgy can remember a lot of ugly Ducks play calling and might be able to coach Johnson about what to avoid.

Johnson played quarterback for the FCS U Northern Iowa Panthers from 1989 to 1992. In 1992, he was second-team all-conference. In his final three seasons, he was the starting quarterback, leading UNI to three straight playoff appearances. One of his backups for these three seasons was future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner. In those four seasons the Panthers were 8-3, 8-4, 11-2, 12-2. Since 1994 he has been part of staffs at Missouri, Kansas, So. Miss, Louisville, C. Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia, Colorado, Mich State and Wyoming. The last outpost was Wyoming where the Cowboys were 3-9 in 2024 including a win in Pullman, and 3-4 when he was fired in 2025. He joined Oregon in March 2026. Johnson is the only Oregon staffer with significant offensive play calling experience, with stops at Louisiana-Lafayette, Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan State and Wyoming. "He’s also coming in with a different perspective and a different view, not being with us the last few years," Lanning said. "He can provide a couple of things that might be different than what we’ve done that I think can trigger some success for us on that side of the ball." Work has already begun to identify Oregon's next full-time offensive coordinator, though Lanning doesn't expect that to be finalized any time soon. "I don’t think an announcement is gonna happen right around the corner," Lanning said. "Again, to think that you’re not always preparing for moments like that, I think would be wrong, too. So there’s an awareness, there’s an evaluation process. You want to be really thorough as you go through that. Is that going to be occurring over the next few weeks, months? Yes. Does that mean that we make an announcement tomorrow? It just doesn’t really fit with the cycle of football."

I believe Chip Long is an off-field analyst at Louisville. I recognize the list in this thread had a premise of prior connection with Lanning. But, I would prefer Oregon pursue an assistant with several years experience. It was pretty apparent that whomever was in the booth this season did not know how to adjust to what the defense was doing. That talent comes with years of experience seeing various defenses in real time. That talent also is needed in game prep during the week. Will Stein hired Justin Burke from UTSA. Burke is 38, so whiskers is not always necessary. But, experience or past proof of performance should be. The priority should NOT be "let's give the young guy a chance." At least not if you are hiring with aspirations of being near the top of the Big Ten.

"Getting ready for Northwestern...." Nov. 23, 2025: Chip Kelly was fired as the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator after a disappointing 2-9 start to the season. The decision came following a 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns, marking the sixth game this year where the Raiders failed to score at least 20 points. Kelly, who joined the Raiders after winning a national title as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, struggled to improve the team’s offense, which ranked near the bottom of the league in scoring, total yards, and red zone efficiency. This marks the second midseason firing of an offensive coordinator for the Raiders in consecutive years. Luke Getsy was fired in Nov. 2024.

I do think he needs some maturity on the staff. Coordinators generally need to have enough prior experience to immediately recognize what an opponent is doing at the time they are doing it. Here's a bit of college football trivia which calls attention to the situation as a target. In the last 50 years of AP football polls, only 5 teams have been pre-season No. 1 or No. 2 and finished the season unranked. Obviously Penn State last season which started at No. 2. Then in the 49 prior seasons just 4. Including No. 1 USC in 2012. All 5 of them finished unranked ...and for a couple it was Top 20 (not 25) final ranking years. Those 2 might have made top 25. But, and this is significant, all 5 of them finished with 6 wins or more, and above .500, including 6-5-1 Notre Dame which was No. 2 and then unranked in 1994. Unless the Ducks get their s..t together they could be the first to go from preseason No.1/2 to under .500.

A couple numbers from Wisconsin's 24-7 win over USC. Total offense: 200 - Wisconsin - yes really, 200 for the game 241 - USC - included minus 17 rushing (had 120 vs Oregon) Wisc had 3 TD drives of 75, 75, and 59, but lost enough other yds to end up with 200 for the game.
