Mylyssa Lombardi has been a fascinating study. Altman won his first Pac-12 COY in 12-13, the Ducks finished in second place. He won consecutively in 14-15 & 15-16. In 14-15, the Ducks finished second, 15-16, bucking tradition, Oregon finished in First place. This season, USC finished in second place, and Enfield has won the COY. In the pre-season poll, Oregon was picked to finish in third, behind UCLA and ASU, USC was picked to finish in sixth place.

This I think was the tangible problem, maybe causing in part the idea of "playing not to lose". When a team goes into a game as shaky as Oregon was at QB, especially in a NY6 Bowl, the chance of winning is reduced greatly.

That's the rub, I'm afraid. Cassel played a bit as a back-up at USC, but that in no way goes against your point. He stuck it out and ended up with an NFL career, different time.
