At night, the ground cools rapidly, creating a layer of cold air near the surface that is capped by warmer air above. This acts like a lid, trapping smoke and stagnant air near the ground. Wind speeds generally decrease at night, further preventing smoke from blowing away. Why does the smoke get worse in the morning? Cool air gets trapped near the ground overnight, trapping wildfire smoke close to the surface.
