Lanning Let's Get the Band Back Together: Hire Chip, Helf and Greatwood
I do think he needs some maturity on the staff. Coordinators generally need to have enough prior experience to immediately recognize what an opponent is doing at the time they are doing it. That comes with seeing it before, and knowing how to adjust to it. 1-Miami – Shannon Dawson – 49 2-Ohio St – Arthur Smith – 44 3-Georgia – Mike Bobo – 52 4-Indiana – Mike Shanahan - 37 5-Notre Dame – Mike Denbrock - 62 6-Utah – Kevin McGiven - 49 7-UCLA – Dean Kennedy - 35 8-BYU – Aaron Roderick – 52 9-Kentucky – Joe Sloan - 39 10-Alabama – Ryan Grubb – 50 11-Texas – Kyle Flood – 55 The O-coords above under 40 have a head coach with O experience. And/or were coords elsewhere before.

Dan Lanning’s $56 Million Buyout: Oregon’s Golden Handcuffs
Come On, Man! It's a fracking game. Stuff happens. In a bad year after a bad offseason the team is 4-3. You do know that Bama sucked wind for decades, right? How long has it been since SC's blood has been blue? Wisconsin is now in the top 25, should Fickell have been fired? What kind of season are preseason ranked Michigan, Penn State, UW, and Texas A+M experiencing? What would Oregon's record be with Miami, Notre Dame's, or Texas Tech's schedule? Who in the last five seasons would have a better record at Oregon than Dan Lanning? Who else could bring talent as he has to Eugene? Rob Mullens and a football GM have to take control and fix this? Mullens promoted Helfrich and hired Slick. Of course, you are welcome to your POV, but I'm happy that we're not sharing a foxhole. Stuff happens.

And Here it Comes: "Oregon is College Football’s Biggest Fraud"
Will was here three years. Nix in year two, Dillion for a year and the Dante year 1. Nix did do quite a bit of formation checks in the RPO scheme that we didn't see Dante making last year. Of course, the experience gap was miles apart between those two.

Dan Lanning’s $56 Million Buyout: Oregon’s Golden Handcuffs
I think what he's saying is even considering a buyout it's going too far. I can't speak for him, but I'm along that line of thinking. Personally for me, Life happens. A lot of people have serious problem with life. That's why we're seeing a bunch of bandwagon fans going crazy and acting like Penn State fans or Ohio State fans and Michigan fans. It has been beyond the pale. Caesar crossed Rubicon and the Republic started to crumble. When you start having civil war because of one poor decision to elevate someone that didn't have the experience means that a lot of people are fragile. Nothing against anybody here, but character is built through losing. The best part about this forum, is there's been a lot of educated, and informed as much as you can be informed for not being a coach, and thought processes about how to fix the problems. I haven't seen a lot of character in our fan base. And it should be more than obvious that I'm pretty pissed off. As much as I get pissed off when I see guys looking at that damn quarterback instead of covering his man. I think the media has had a pretty good feel for how to address the issues. They are asking what his thought process is, they're not attacking Dan Lanning the man. I may have said this before, but I knew Casey Brooks when she was in school with me, and both Washington and at Oregon. She told me some of the stupidest and the most ridiculous things that fans said about her father. And this was 15 years before he elevated the program to the level it started to become and what it is today. We don't make the playoffs this year - so what!!! It doesn't define the program under Lanning, and it's certainly isn't anything like it was in the 60s and the seventies and early 80s. 3 years before Penn State fired James franklin, people start to say he was a fraud. They poisoned the well, and every decision he made after that point was considered questionable. Look at Penn State today. They suck. That is exactly what happens when people start to prematurely raise their expectations beyond reality. I will say this again, Dan Lanning is elevated his team that had no business being in the semifinals last year, despite a lot of talent. They had holes in personnel, they could not figure out what their quarterback was going to do when the quarterback had clear receivers wide open. Here's the most egregious part of it all: when other program tried to poach Lanning -because he was elevating the program beyond what Cristobal had done-Dan Lanning pledged his loyalty forever. The minute he struggles for what, half a season everybody wants to dump him and dump on him. I for one, do not want to be a fan like Penn state's, Ohio state's, alabama, or Michigan's. Programs will not elevate to National championship status easily. The programs that have already won a championship, are far better a position to win another one than it is for somebody else to actually elevate like Curt Cignetti did. All this conjecture about Lanning being a fraud is inaccurate. Do you think Nick Saban won national championships in his first five years? Absolutely not. He was just as stubborn, and he actually sought help from a psychologist to elevate his program. That was at Michigan state, before he won a national championship. Oregon is one of the institutions that is doing quite well, and will continue to do quite well in this environment. They have the right coach, they found them when nobody knew about him, and they will stick by him because he is the right man for the job.

Lanning Let's Get the Band Back Together: Hire Chip, Helf and Greatwood
Something about the coach Terry situation just seems puzzling to me. I think he came in way under qualified but had great results with guys that already new what they were doing but poor results with guys he's taught from day one. It makes me think what is more impressive, being the conductor of the London Phil Harmonic, or just being a very good high school band teacher? One can meld some of the best players in the world into a fantastic symphony while the other just gets kids able to play regardless of skill level. I think that's a decision Lanning will have to deal with. As for getting back to the post topic, I'd love to see the return of Greatwood.

Lanning Let's Get the Band Back Together: Hire Chip, Helf and Greatwood
I was just having some old fart nostalgic fun with that post, it's fantasy not reality. Chip and Steve are a Duck legends and Helf say what you may was a hell of a game planner, OC and QB coach. FYI - Chip still runs his zone but has adapted with a counter game as well. He is still an elite feel for the game play caller.

Exactly right. This sort of talk is a symptom of the hot take sports talk culture, where getting attention is more important than accuracy or understanding. Give the fire Lanning talk a rest.

Lanning Let's Get the Band Back Together: Hire Chip, Helf and Greatwood
Dazed, thank you for all of your posts today. After a deeply discouraging weekend for Oregon fans, your suggestion provided a happy and hopeful moment. Part of me, possibly now most of me, wants it to happen. However, I do have some questions. Can any amount of time wash away the stink of the Willie Lyle's shenanigans and Chip's abrupt departure, which left Helf in the lurch? Chip Kelly does not suffer fools gladly, in fact, he does not suffer them at all. Can such a man be persuaded by any amount of money to return to Eugene, with its college-town atmosphere? Yes, Chip knows football and loves to coach, but I thought he was known for the zone blocking schemes you were deriding in your previous posts. I am not sure that Terry is primarily responsible for the O Line issues, but why not make a clean sweep and put Greatwood, AKA Greatlinecoach, fully in charge. (Again, assuming he can teach something other than Chip's zone schemes.) Helf is such a good guy that he might actually accept, but man that is quite a demotion from head coach. Maybe as OC, but if we want gap scheme, why not get a gap scheme guy?

Dan Lanning’s $56 Million Buyout: Oregon’s Golden Handcuffs
Thanks. It appears others think I called for Lanning to be fired and here is my thought on that. If we can somehow raise 56.7 million to pay the buyout to fire Lanning, then we have become a true blood program without winning a Natty. IMO there is a snowball's chance in hell Lanning is getting fired soon, we are looking at like $47 million buyout after next season and $36 million the year after that. Mullens should rightly be open to criticism for extending with Lanning a fully guaranteed contract and he should be expected to be all hands on deck to fix the current dumpster fire. We are missing out on $4 million in playoff money, another $4 million for not hosting a playoff game after a $40 million NIL spend. Lanning making $10.6 million per year should be open to criticism for the current dumpster fire and every other single coaching decision he's ever made.

And Here it Comes: "Oregon is College Football’s Biggest Fraud"
First of all, the guy is inaccurate. Stein was only here 2 years, and the offense didn't start to stall until after the USC game. They looked pretty bad and it was still averaging over 30 points a game so that means it's a total fraud to say that they were fraudulent at that point. If the defense had themselves together, Oklahoma state would have been buried- that is another inaccurate assessment of the situation. The guys obviously an Oregon hater. I don't have a problem with that since our fan base was getting quite arrogant. What I do have a problem with is the guy that's won over 50 games out of 60 and is being called a fraud is extremely egregious. Lanning made a poor decision. And it's quite funny because there are a lot of fan bases right now that are wanting to fire their coach for not being perfect. To take it to an extreme and say the Lanning is not a successful coach it's just ridiculous. Four active coaches have a National Title on their resume. Under this guy's standards, a lot of coaches are frauds. Mehringer was in charge of the entire offense, and he was doing a poor job of putting it together despite the injuries. That's all this is. To say that Dan Lanning is a fraud is just pathetic.

Dan Lanning’s $56 Million Buyout: Oregon’s Golden Handcuffs
Where are you coming up with this response? Did you read the whole post? I never said they were going to fire Lanning; I make the point a $56 million buyout makes firing not an option. The post concedes Lanning isn't going anywhere and we have some choices to make to shore up the current issues.

Lanning Let's Get the Band Back Together: Hire Chip, Helf and Greatwood
How about we execute a complete 180-degree shift in offensive staff hiring by experienced old school Ducks. Chip as OC. Helf as QB coach Greatwood on the OL and mentors Terry With Chip Kelly famously known for focusing heavily on scheme over the daily recruiting grind, Lanning, Samples, Douglas, Terry will handle the bulk of offensive recruiting legwork, while Kelly and Helfrich will step in selectively for prime-time in-home visits. Dan Lanning with a reduced day-to-day offensive administration role, committing to hitting the recruiting trail hard as the undisputed face of the program.

🤨 And now it begins... Oregon OC Hotboard: Where the Ducks go at offensive coordinatorChip Kelly — Northwestern OCDana Holgorsen — Nebraska OCAaron Roderick — BYU OCBuster Faulkner — Florida OCMike Norvell — Florida State HCRob Ezell — Wake Forest OCMike Locksley — Former Maryland HCSlade Nagle — Houston OCThis one might be the sweet spot for Oregon. Nagle is a veteran assistant who has great experience working alongside Willie Fritz at Tulane and Houston, and has played a major role in helping transform the Cougars' offense over the past year. He's a former QB with a lot of experience developing at the position, and could be a bit easier to grab considering he is a more under-the-radar name https://duckswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/ducks/football/2026/10/25/oregon-football-where-ducks-go-at-offensive-coordinator/92431527007/

And Here it Comes: "Oregon is College Football’s Biggest Fraud"
"In six weeks, he suddenly doesn't know how to coach?" That is the real question. Did the game change so much, so fast that it passed him by? It happened to a lot of coaches/teams. Swinny, Franklin, USC, Fla St, to name a few. Yes, it is possible. It is also possible that the Ducks just hit a bump in the road and all will be fixed soon. Oklahoma was considered down and out and then they came back and beat Texas.

Marsh Duck - The Duck's Loss to Illinois is on Mehringer
We had a what I'd call a pro spread with Dilly and Klemm. Dilly ran heavy set gap, traditional gap, zone RPO's, empty sets and had good constraint plays. I've noticed over the last three games Lanning has been trying to roll that back, but Drew didn't have the play calling chops. We've run that old Josh 14, gap with counter and duo, some zone and empty sets.

Dan Lanning’s $56 Million Buyout: Oregon’s Golden Handcuffs
The offense this year is as bad as the defense was in 2016. The game had zoomed past Helfrich and he couldn't keep up with it. It remains to be determined if Dan Lanning can recover. He can recruit both sides of the ball. He made as bad an OC hire as Helfrich did his DC hire. I thought this Illinois game was going to be the start of a turn around because Illinois is not that good. After a good start, the Ducks got blown out 21 - 0. It is going to a tough uphill climb for Lanning. I think because of his contract and his past success on the field and recruiting, he will get some grace and he will get some time. As much time as it takes to prove whether or not he is the right fit for the job. But a couple more seasons like this and the writing will be on the wall. I think there is a good chance the Ducks could lose out the rest of the season. Other teams have figured out how to scheme the Ducks on offense and defense, especially if they have running QBs.

We’re Spoiled, Suck It Up
After 55 years of Oregon football, and actually having sat through the entire Toilet Bowl, yeah... some of us definitely remember. And I also remember in 1989 having to beg, borrow, and steal just to get into the low-level Independence Bowl (while about half the state blew up the fax machine at Independence Bowl headquarters pleading to let us in). And when we found out we were going, after about a 152 year bowl drought, just getting in almost felt like we had won the Super Bowl. And I never ever want to see anything like those God forsaken football decades again. For better or for worse, we are now a program where the expectation is pretty much that we are Top-15 competitive, competing for a playoff spot, and, perhaps one day, a national championship. So, when everybody's expectations were so high, to see the reality that's happening, is beyond shocking. However, today's move with the termination of our OC, should be a nice start back in the right direction. But please, pardon me if, after 55 years, I stick around a little bit longer just to see how this plays out 😄.

CBS Reporting Mehringer Is Out
There should be a national search for both coordinators. Hampton is doing better with his veteran defense and he should certainly be in the conversation, but he should have to reapply for the position. The season got off to a very rough start and there continues to be big random lapses.
