Canzano did some great reporting when he went after Lavish Larry. This little piece is surprisingly lightweight on the subject, IMHO. Nobody is selling an equity partnership to a conference. Canzano must be going after eyeballs, and numbers with this article. Now he just needs to get his numbers up so he can get paid. I suppose it is an indication about most of the writing being done. It just matters how many will click on your link. Every click is monetized, who cares about the content. Makes sense, he was on salary when he did the reporting for the Oregonian. An equity deal is very different from a tv deal. I will also say private equity isn't full of a bunch of fools. An equity deal would have been a short term gain, and a longterm loss. A TV deal is income and that is where Larry failed and failed badly. There is a reason no other conference is selling equity. They are signing tv deals, don't be fooled by Larry twice. The Big 12 isn't signing an equity deal, they signed a tv deal, and won't be paying any private equity firm 15% of the deal.

I would disagree, she could care less about the value, and has no clue how to add value. All she cares about is having power, and perceived power. There is nothing better for an ego than having a professional sports team. Agree about the worst case scenario, and we thought the jail blazers were bad! Paul moved on from his jail blazer days, we may be just entering the downward spiral her brother had to learn from.

What makes Notre Dame exceptional, besides being a very good academic institution, is there following. Although less than 9,000 students are enrolled at Notre Dame, just about every person affiliated religiously and ethnically relates to the school like they went there. They also have a top ten endowment, which is also a powerful too. What makes Notre Dame football exceptional is their history, and little else.

Now, who will be the next great Oregon QB! This is going to get interesting.

Those who inherit large sums of money, most often, have no clue about how to keep or grow the success which put them where they are. She seems like the classic example of someone who is the clueless second generation rich. Maybe someday someone will advise here she has no clothes on!

Great insight, but who started at qb?

It is crazy the talent we have at qb, right now. I look forward to the better development, and use of this talent going forward. It is also nice to see this staff bringing in who they see as the future of Oregon football. The talent level seems to be as high, if not higher than the previous staff. As this staffs players hit campus we will start to see a bigger transfer movement. Right now the old staff's recruits are still battling to win positions. As elite talent comes to town, and they are Lannings guys it will be harder to keep the transfer portal door closed. I was surprised we didn't see more transfers after Nix came in, but this kid may send at least one to the door. Interesting times, but it is onward and forward!

I knew Portland had a NBA team in the 70's and 80's, but didn't realize they were still a team, interesting. It would be nice to see that team come back!

In order to know about Duck Football, one must know about Oregon Athletic History. Oregon won the very first NCAA basketball title, back in 1939 and there is a big push to win it again. Recreational running started in Eugene and was introduced by Bill Bowerman. Bowerman is a legendary figure at the U of O and was the co-founder of Nike, along with Phil Knight. Oregon Track's founder was Bill Hayward, our venue is named after him Hayward Field. Our greatest athlete was, arguably, Steve Prefontaine. To understand Oregon athletics one must understand the Kamikaze Kids. This was a style of basketball unheard of when played at the time. Every loose ball was contested and the full court press was a way of life. UCLA at their peak hated playing Oregon, in what was called the Pit, likely the least friendly place to play a game in the country. What the Kamikaze Kids were to basketball, Chip Kelly's offense was to football. Nobody played as fast, with as much precision as Chip Kelly's teams. He was lucky to inherit a complete staff, and systems which allowed him to instill his style of football, and again Oregon athletics shocked a sport. This takes me back to Steve Prefontaine. He ran every race like it was his last. From start to finish he just ran as fast as he thought possible. He never lost a race of over a mile in his college career. This mentality is instilled in every successful athletic program Oregon has, and garners the enthusiasm of Oregon fans like no other. Our most recent coach did well, but didn't adhere to the pedal to the metal thinking. If Oregon is to get to the National Championship again that is what we most likely will see again. Oregon needs to, once again, be a program that leaves it all on the field. I hope that is what we all see, and if Georgia comes out on top then you were the better team, and congrats. Hopefully we see Oregon Football back to innovating and inspiring the faithful with an all out effort, and we win, but most importantly we need to see Steve Prefontaine influencing our athlete's again!

T I would disagree that the rules are there to protect the competitiveness of the game. The rules are there to make sure no owner does what every owner would do if there were no rules. The owners are extremely competitive and with no rules they would all make a bidding war out of free agency. It would be mayhem, much like college football is now. Many of the owners don't like Roger Goodell, but they respect him and know what he is doing is the best thing for the game. The NFL works because they stick to the salary cap and there are punishments which work. You can lose draft picks, or contracts can be voided. What is funny is hearing T A$M say they aren't paying players to sign. You then see the video of Texas telling recruits the alumni will give them lots of money. The problem is there is not accountability, the NCAA is toothless, all talk. College football is headed toward more of a NBA model if they aren't careful. The NBA they just have to pay a fine, and guys with too much money, fines don't work. There are a multitude of exceptions to the salary cap and most teams are over the salary cap. This is what college football will begin to look like if they don't take a more proactive approach to limiting the moneys impact on the game. We don't want college football to look like the NBA, end of story.

I guess UCLA wasn't selling those handicap parking passes to their players for enough money? Even when they allow attendance, ucla doesn't fill the stadium. I'm sure that will all change when they play Indiana, right?

The NCAA basketball tournament announcers this year were constantly talking about where the player on the court had transferred from. This will be true in college football soon in games and bowl games. I suppose it will now include which conference(s) teams came from. The end of generational traditions will be a sad day though! I suppose that is why we never came up with a new name for the Oregon-Oregon State game? In most sports, pro and college, you are cheering for a uniform, more than a group of players, a team. As long as the Ducks continue to innovate and win I am ok, for now. It also could turn out to be a more compelling product on the field, who knows. All I know is I am a Duck fan for life!

As much as I hated the NCAA, the end of the NCAA isn't the answer. Much like getting rid of a bad employer, the next one can be just as destructive and seems to be. Having no one really in charge, and everyone going after the almighty dollar isn't the rejoinder. I look for cannibalism to be the direction until somehow the truly elite decide to agree to some form of oversight. I look for this type of mentality to destroy the Rutgers, types of the Big 10, and then once the musical chairs is over, a much nicer term than cannibalism, there becomes a commissioner of the super conferences. Right now I have no idea how the unconstrained market will play out, but it will studied by many for years to come. What happens when a controlled market goes unbridled seems to have nothing to compare it too. I can't think of a comparable situation in recent history. Maybe Genghis Khan and the Mongolian Empire would be a comparable time with the SEC and the BIG 10 being Genghis driven by the TV contracts? Agree the NFL model probably won't be the answer. Maybe how European soccer leagues are run, you have to win to stay in the super conferences? Within the super conferences only the truly elite will stay in the league, and the lower tiers will rotate in and out. Bottomline there will have to be different oversight, as the NCAA seems unable to provide what is needed. Emmert may have been a bigger buffoon than Lavish Larry, if that is possible.

What we see in the NFL is the worlds greatest capitalists who realize unfettered capitalism would be complete chaos. What we have in college football is unfettered capitalism and David spelled it out extremely well. The NCAA is dead, they have little or no control of college football. What we need is a ruling body, or a commissioner of the new college football. Somebody needs to create rules and have an iron fist or this is going to get ugly. The owners of the NFL know what happening in college football isn't sustainable. They would never tolerate what is going on now.

Much like Annie stated so well, we can't control what other programs do or what other conferences do, nor what the tv contracts come out with. What we can control is putting the best team on the field with the most compelling story out there. If this happens the general public will want to see the Ducks play and the money will follow. Let's not freak out with what others are doing, just revel in how well our Ducks are being run and put together. All the other stuff will follow, and we won't have to worry about all this noise. That has been the Oregon way for a while, others tend to follow us, let's keep it that way. So all I know is these headlines really mean nothing, nothing to see here. What matters is what happens this fall and the falls going forward. The rest will take care of itself, so lets continue to discuss what matters our Ducks and football!

Charles is a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, but is a testament to who Charles is, that air is rarefied air in this day and age. Charles is a throwback to a better time, a time where integrity and decency mattered more. We may call him FishDuck, but really he is just all that is a good about being a Duck. I would be intrigued to see Oregon go it alone. If the very smart people associated with Oregon can put something together where Oregon builds their brand, and brings in bank then that would be the shrewdest move. Also one seldom does well when you are reacting, and panicking. Let's let the dust settle on this one a bit before we run off all half cocked. We are in about the 3rd inning of this whole new era of college football. The spoiled children and ucla just stole second and are standing on second base thinking they are all that and a bad of chips. They might be stuck on second for a while.
