  1. If this were any year since ‘33 that would be a dig. I have been a Green Wave fan since birth. At one point I forgot they even had a football team, let alone an FBS team. But in 2023, Tulane is legit. It’s gonna be a great year!
  2. The schadenfreude feels so right.
  3. Also, Tulane is #1 in the FBS at 12-2 against the spread. #2 at 11-2?…. Go Beavs!
  4. My mom is a Tulane alum, and I grew up in NOLA. I attended the Tulane watch party in Los Angeles wearing my green and blue. The sight of Caleb Williams literally pouting like a toddler while he watches his team lose will be one of my favorite bowl season memories of all time. The only better bowl memory is Jameis Winston’s ghost fumble. Go Green Wave!!!
  5. I have played for coaches that lost their temper, and it was never an isolated incident. It was always the worst coaches. The great coaches wouldn’t even think of losing their cool. Young people should not be exposed to that type of poor leadership. It’s a terrible role model and makes the game miserable. And that’s if you’re lucky enough not be the one on the receiving end of the tirade.
  6. I have witnessed an unfortunate number of adults losing their temper, and it is a big deal. LEADERS losing their cool over something silly IS a big deal. I'm sorry you've been inured to negativity, but that doesn't mean that we should tolerate it.
  7. I am a total nerd, so I had to do the math... The Pac-12 had 160% more QBs starting in the NFL than any other league. Fun fact: only 2 FBS teams had multiple QBs starting this week--Cal and Clemson. Mariota could always sneak back into a starting lineup. 2023 is looking to be just as dominant. Pac-12 8 Nick Foles Arizona Aaron Rogers Cal Jared Goff Cal Justin Herbert Oregon Davis Mills Stanford Sam Darnold USC Tyler Huntley Utah Gardner Minshew Washington State ACC 5 Deshaun Watson Clemson Trevor Lawrence Clemson Daniel Jones Duke Teddy Bridgewater Louisville Kenny Pickett Pittsburgh Big-10 5 Tom Brady Michigan Kirk Cousins Michigan State Justin Fields Ohio State David Blough Purdue Russell Wilson Wisconsin SEC 5 Mac Jones Alabama Jarrett Stidham Auburn Joe Burrow LSU Dak Prescott Mississippi State Joshua Dobbs Tennesee Big-12 4 Brock Purdy Iowa State Baker Mayfield Oklahoma Andy Dalton TCU Patrick Mahomes Texas Tech Big EAST 1 Geno Smith WVU AAC 1 Desmond Ridder Cincinatti C-USA 1 Mike White Western Kentucky FCS 1 Carson Wentz North Dakota State Mountain West 1 Josh Allen Wyoming
  8. I really enjoyed watching that—thanks for sharing.
  9. It demonstrates a complete lack of discipline. Discipline is a requirement for any great endeavor. It’s really astounding that Arch Manning wants to play for that. Frankly, it makes me question his judgment. No NIL deal would be worth it to play for 7-win Sark.
  10. I think, in general, we improved penalty-wise over the Mari0 years. I don’t have the stats, but that was my impression. Penalties have been the aspect of OBD that has disappointed me most since the Helfrich years. There’s just no excuse to get tons of penalties. Obviously, there is such a thing as a “good” penalty. And sometimes there is excessive noise or unfair play by the other team that draws penalties, but those should be few and far between.
  11. The Oregonian buried the lede again. It wasn’t just Bronny James’ team. It was two of LeBron James’ sons along w the sons of Hardaway and Pippen, all on the same HS team. And West Linn beat them w no player over 6’3”. As a former Lakeridge bball player, it’s hard to cheer for WL, but dang—that’s impressive.
  12. It would be interesting to see the results for all the games in one place. Did anyone win more than 1 game? Or was anyone consistently close? Is it skill or luck? I wouldn’t ask for more work from Charles, but maybe next year each week’s winner post could include a copy/paste recap of the whole season. And the grand prize could be the “privilege” of writing a primer on how to make better predictions. 😉
  13. It was interesting to hear so many of the commentators say things along the lines of, “The NFL will finally get Herbie in the Playoffs.” I agree that the Playoffs will be better w Herbie, but the framing is odd. It wasn’t the NFL *fans* who will be pleased, but the NFL organization itself. To me that shows the level of respect Herbie has earned in a few short years. Top to bottom his colleagues think he’s good for the game itself—not bad for the Sheldon Fishing Club president.
  14. Wow—Deion is all talk and no class. Gross. My heart breaks for those young men.
  15. This stung for a moment, but after time to consider, I still think it’s a win. EVERYONE saw what happened on announcement day. Everyone knows he wanted to play for the Ducks. It was a cautionary tale… The rest of the recruits in the world are just thinking how they have to make sure to turn Mom into a Ducks fan ASAP. And dang, not a good intro to the Sooner locker room. “I wanted to be a Duck but my mom made me be a Sooner.” Yikes.
  16. If the coaches have a scholy for him, and he wants to be a Duck, then that’s all I need to know to say, Yes. The more competition, the better. And if DJU wants to be part of that, more power to him. The fact that he declined the invitation to run Mari0’s offense a couple years ago actually sounds like a smart move.
  17. I just hope Klemm sticks around for a while.
  18. Here’s a question that just popped into my head… What if Mari0 is great at recruiting “stars” but not “players?” I ask bc I have been mystified by all the highly rated recruits that washed out for Mari0. That top-5 class he had never materialized on the field. Sure, it could be Mari0’s inability to coach up players. But very few ended being great for a different coach either (Trey Benson at FSU being the obvious exception). If one is measured by the rank of the recruiting class, it obviously incentivizes stars over players. One example of a “player” is someone Mari0 didn’t recruit… CJ Verdell, who was the lowest ranked player in his class, but who earned RB1.
  19. That’s some existential stuff there. Not what I was expecting for NIL day, but absolutely the quality of post I expect from the OBD forum. 🙏
  20. @2002duck, I hear ya. Let’s focus on the positives.
  21. Me too! That’s why I love @Ktmguy2018’s idea. What we dislike is the boosters gaming the system. This solution renders the boosters less influential. It’s so simple and really is good for players. There could be bonuses for players who transfer to teams w greater reach. But if a player washes out, her/his contract won’t.
  22. While I am a proponent of UBI, I don’t think of this arrangement in that frame. I think real businesses, NOT boosters, don’t actually care where an athlete plays, just that the athlete is successful. So real businesses should be perfectly happy w/wherever a player plays. Sure you could have contracts dependent on playing in a certain league/region, but the deal is with the player and not tied to the school.
  23. @Ktmguy2018 Yours is the best solution to the NIL problem I’ve heard… NIL cannot be conditioned on where you play!!! It’s easy to explain and gets to the spirit of NIL, while it eliminates the boosters. I would love to hear the opinions of the rest of our other OBD members. 🙏
