Brilliant scheduling by the Pac, have both Oregon BB and SB at UCLA basically playing at the same time on two of the three days. Maybe it cut travel cost (would they travel together?) but It certainly won't help attendance.

I often wonder how much pandemic restrictions affected Oregon sports. Each state imposed their own regulations, and then each institution within a state developed their own protocols. My general impression was Oregon maintained fairly restrictive standards on group activities and social distancing. Kelly Graves reported the 20-21 team didn't even have post-practice meals together or group meetings to watch video. It is hard to develop team cohesion and unity when separated. During that timeframe OBD's lost team leaders, Alpha dogs if you will. Troy Dye, Payton Pritchard and of course Sabrina all moved on. Chris Duarte helped carry MBB but he was gone for this disappointing year. Both football and women's basketball did less than expected the last two years. Is it possible covid prevention measures contributed to the lack of performance? Note this is not a commentary on the measures themselves. Based on limited reports the Oregon teams avoided serious outbreaks and that is a good thing. I wouldn't want to emulate LSU who reported that "most" of their players caught the virus.

Canzano addressed NIL in a recent iece which Charles posted. His numbers are wildly different. In the first six months Oregon athletes signed 273 endorsement deals. The average value: $1,087. Biggest deal: $100,000 (Thibodeaux). But if you remove that six-figure outlier you get a better idea of how the typical Oregon athlete fared. Average at UO without Thibodeaux: $723.

Bo Nix's Oregon bio says he graduated from Auburn last fall. Eliminating the requirement to sit out a year is for first time transfers so I don't imagine Nix has any other options.

I haven't followed labor law closely but how would a collective bargaining agreement apply in a right to work state? A player would have the right to refuse joining the union so wouldn't they have the right to negotiate their own NIL deals? The school isn't the employer so they have would have no say in the matter. The professional CBA's impose a salary cap on what a team can pay, I don't believe they govern the additional money a player can earn with endorsements and appearances. Wouldn't the same hold for a college CBA? For example, Texas is a right to work state. A recruit could not be required to join the collective bargaining agreement. While the school gives him the same benefits as other scholarship holders isn't he free to negotiate NIL compensation without limits? The funds would be from outside interests who are also not signers on the CBA?

Every league has a champion because that is the way they are structured. Perhaps a more pertinent question is whether the 'teams' of today could compete with those we remember from out youth. Could the 2022 Rams penetrate the Steel Curtain? Could the last several NBA champions avoid getting swept by the '77 Trailblazers, let alone the Willis Reed led New York Knicks or the Red Auerbach Boston Celtics, teams that played as (gasp) teams? How would the Brooklyn Dodgers or NY Yankees of the same era fare in today's leagues? It is difficult to compare athletes of different era's. Today they are specialized and have trained all their lives for one sport, many times for one position. They look like better athletes but, as those of us who watched Steve Prefontaine can attest, guts and determination often triumph. Ronnie Lee wasn't the most gifted basketball player but I want him on my team every time. Not all of the athletes today have Name, Image Likeness as top of mind awareness but I believe there are enough to damage their respective sports.

Belmont did hit a couple three's that were out of this world. One defied the laws of physics, the other defied all earthly odds.

Football-preseason #11 ended losing 3 of 4. Men's BB-preseason #13 ended losing 5 of 7. Women's BB-preseason #10 ended with a disappointing loss but at least they were competitive and worth watching. Can't say the same for the other two. At least the national media respected the Oregon brand. Will that last?

Do we really believe donors make a cost/benefit analysis? In major programs they pony up millions to fire the current coach and his staff, then pledge millions more to hire the flavor of the day. U$C saw four head coaches and two interim in twelve years. Think Miami. In a few years they will repeat the process. The cost is millions per year. Why would NIL be any different?

Hugh's teams went 11-8-1 during his time at Washington but that didn't slow down the money pipeline. For years cars and cash have flowed freely in the SEC yet the same few programs rule the top of the standings. All those lucrative handshakes didn't really change results on the field yet they continued unabated. Hope springs eternal, each year is a new season. Wealthy donors don't think about the NIL recipients that don't work out--surely the next recruit will lead them to the promised land. Lack of success didn't stop under the table payments, why would that change now that it is no longer cheating? I doubt NIL sanity will prevail without a governing body to set rules and then enforce them. At this time we don't have such an entity.
