I have to admit, I completely lost track of Chip after the Las Vegas Raiders fiasco. I know that there are some who still dislike how he left Oregon, and when I see highlights of those Duck teams....dang, what a show that was!!

I am of the opinion that Chip caught lightening in a bottle with the group of players Oregon had at that time and how they incorporated into the system. He struggled to adapt past that at many of his stops. I bear him no ill will, Oregon certainly secured a center stage spot since Chip.

It almost pains me to see him here now....but who knows, maybe Northwestern can become an offensive juggernaut.

He absolutely did and he came into lead an Oregon's taff that was a ton of vets and old timers. And in all honesty they kinda worked out some of the bugs to the up tempo offense under Bellotti.

Alioti knew and understood that the up tempo offense meant the defense response needed to change. People tend to have strong feelings about the whole bend-but-don't-break defense but with Oregon limited recruiting strength and talent pool that was the best option to keep the defense on the field for a long time.

The support around Chip at Oregon was special and allowed him to do what he was best at. He didn't have that anywhere else... Well Ohio State I guess.

We'll see how he does at North Western.

Interesting hires by NW coach Braun. NW brought in Chip as OC and Jerry Neuheisel as the QB coach.

Chip and Jerry have their work cut out coaching QB Aiden Chiles, who started at Oregon State, followed John Smith to Michigan State, and lost his starting job last season to jersey-stitcher nightmare Alessio Milivojevic.

Chip flamed out with the Raiders, but he was not working with a top NFL roster, and Pete Carroll was past his prime.

Chip has his construction uniform on in honor of the renovated Ryan Field, scheduled to open in early October. 35,000 capacity in a state-of-the-art, wired to the max, stadium.

NW plays a cruel and unusual 11 straight games in 2026 without a week off. A Halloween visit to Eugene and Autzen on October 31st will be NW's 7th game in a row. The only break in the schedule is that one of the 11 games is at home vs G6 Ball State.

The week before the game at Ohio State on a spooky evening could be a trap game for OBD. Ohio State pays a Halloween visit to USC.

Colorado is NW's P4 OOC opponent. The game will be played at Martin Stadium, where OBD played NW last season.

I think NW will go over 5.5 wins with six or seven victories and again, go bowling.

I don't follow NW much but I do read Phil Steele's preseason mag. He has 7 of the Northwestern starters as one of the top 4 in the conference at their positions. That seems to work out to 1/3 of the starters being top notch.

I guess I'd be on alert if I had to play them at their new stadium this year.......especially since they have coaches like Chip as assistants.

How great must UCLA fans feel? This guy left as your head coach, and two years later, he's cosplaying as Bob the Builder meets Harold and the Purple Crayon at Northwestern. Will Northwestern replicate a Vanderbilt turnaround? Well they did fully finance the 380 million dollar stadium without public funding, so there's money there.

UCLA might've had to eat some crap with that terrible DeShaun Foster debacle. " We're uh....... In LA...... USC and us......yeah.....". But word is Bob Chesney has brought in some great tackles in the transfer portal, and has Iamaleava looking crisp in the pocket. Maybe the move will work out for all after all.

What is Chips legacy at this point? Innovator, championship coordinator,job hopper, failed NFL coach, MCRib salesman, Chip&Dale dancer?

I'd argue he might be looking for a spot to just quietly finish out his career while being paid well and then retire, he's 62 years old after all.

Northwestern will have lower expectations, lower pressure to win right away, lower recruiting pressure, etc. If things go well, he wraps up his career in a few years when he hits 65 then takes a short flight back to New Hampshire and retire.

I wouldn't be surprised if this happens.

That might make him the smartest or luckiest guy in the game. Only Josh McDaniel can say he got a better deal with less to show. At least Chip was a great coach for a few years at Oregon. McDaniel failed, got fired, held up another franchise after they were willing to give him another shot, and lastly got fired once more.

McDaniel was only a success when he had Tom Brady as a QB.
