Was THIS Win Over USC a Final Nail for SoCal Recruiting?

I was struck at all the stats brought up after the game of how Lanning is 3-0 vs. USC, and Oregon has won 8 of the last 10 meetings, and how USC has not beaten Oregon in TEN YEARS? That is the kind of dominance that we Ol' Greybeard-age fans recall, only with the Trojans being on the good side of it.

We have heard SO MANY times about the new coach, the new assistant, the new recruiting, etc. etc. etc., and yet in the end....OREGON is the West Coast Power. Do you think this last win might make the last straw fall for many the SoCal recruits who are on the fence? This benefit gained could be negated if we don't get things done vs. UCLA in ten days or so.

But if we do--wouldn't this be a massive set of recruiting facts that could be the final factor for so many So-Cal recruits?

Always on TOP...

Yes, if not with the recruits, but with parents.

The last time SUC beat the Ducks was 2016 when everybody beat the Ducks. The time before that required a missed 38 yard field goal at the end of the game. The time before that, your talking the Pete Carrol days nearly twenty years ago. WSU has better recent history against OBD than the Fighting Juice Boxes.

Oh boy that has a nice ring to it! 😝

No it is not the end. Most every High School kid in SoCal grew up a Trojan fan. They all think they can move the needle. I grew up in L.A. as a Bruin fan. The culture in L.A. is all about Trojan swagger. What you saw in number 8 was repeated all over the city. The culture is all about the inner city.

It is what it is, Riley will recruit just fine. There is a reason the Bruins call them the University of Figueroa Ave. what you all witnessed was the real Toejam deal. That is exactly who they are.

Remember #32 is hanging on their ring of honor. That is all you need to know. Those kids love that SOB and worse.

BTW I became a Duck die hard years ago. To hell with UCLA.

If it appears that the recruiting needle is dipping into the red, you can bet Riley will soon be gone and a new hire in place before any ink can dry on signing day. The same old classic salvage story. AD’s know which side of the bread the butter goes on, and the need to appear “reborn” in the eyes of recruits.

Charles, that is a fair question to pose to the Forum.

A few thoughts on this:

I think parents are swayed by what they see and the adjoining perception.

Kids are swayed by what is shiny and new. The immediate threat of that is Chesney with the Bruins. If a socal kid can make the cfp as a Bruin that tbreatens recruiting for both LR and our DL.

NIL money is the biggest threat. It appears that top money drives some athletes.

Winning at a high level and head to head influences recruits. The Ducks need to put UCLA down next weekend. Don't let the,Cignetti coaching tree take solid root out west. 3 seasons ago would anyone of us thought Indiana would be 30-3, riding a 20 game winning streak and playing for a 3rd straight CFP appearance?

Who was Chesney's mentor? UCLA does not have IU or tOSU on their schedule. Just the Ducks.

Go Ducks.....socal recruits will be watching. The Autzen game day experience is a great recruiting tool, too.

Perhaps this will hurt sUc a little, prob not though. No impact on the Ducks imo. Bruins might get a little bump.

If any recruit get turned off of sUc they will probably bounce to one of the modern blue bloods.

It's always an uphill battle to beat distance even against programs that are clearly floundering like USC. The Condoms are more organized from a recruiting standpoint which is why they're now clawing back more of the local recruits. That being said, NIL and a recent history of winning will always give OBD a fighting chance at winning those recruiting battles.

USC has made a great number of untimely bad hires. I say untimely because Kiffin and Sark have done well since they were dismissed, but weren’t ready for USC at their respective times. USC is only one hire away from being great again, but they will never have a run like they did in the 2000’s. So, they rely in gimmicks like the juice boxes thinking that it’s good enough to prop themselves up until Oregon fades into obscurity.

However, Oregon won’t fade like Beavis because they don’t have to rely on other programs to carry them. They will always be a step ahead in facilities, uniforms, marketing, etc. Autzen Stadium is no longer the grassy hill with bleachers carved into it. The old gravel parking lots have been replaced by mausoleums.

The Ducks have deep pockets and are a national brand. Kids don’t care about “zero natty’s” because they all feel they can get the first one. If haters think that Phil Knight’s mortality will change the Duck’s fortunes then they don’t have a clue. Oregon is here to stay and will always have one of the biggest stacks of chips on the table.

In this era, a lost recruiting battle doesn't mean a lost recruit. A year or two later they may be requesting an opportunity to be part of your program. So, I still think putting energy and class into recruiting is vital even if you lose someone on their high school senior signing day.

I don't think Cignetti can claim Chesney? He was HC at Holy Cross the whole time Cignetti was at JMU and Cignetti took most of the JMU coaches he liked with him to Indiana (and as far as I can tell the two never coached together anywhere else).

Interesting comparison between the two is Chesney is in his 17th year as HC and Cignetti in his 16th. Cignetti spending 6 years at Division 2 and 5 years in the FCS, and Chesney 8 years at Division 2 and 3 and 6 years in the FCS. Chesney becoming a HC at 33 while Cignetti didn't until 50 (Chesney actually got his first HC job a year before Cignetti did).

One would think that some teams might come calling for Indiana's DC Bryant Haines (40) and OC Mike Shanahan (36) very soon. Not as familiar with UCLA's guys, but I think their OC (Dean Kennedy) is only 35 and will be a name to watch with a couple more good offensive seasons. Their DC Colin Hitschler (40) I believe also has a good reputation having worked 6 years under Luke Fickell and a season with DeBoer at Alabama before JMU, and also could be a name to watch somewhere at some point. Maybe somebody else can enjoy the off-season coordinator poaching cycle this winter? 🤷‍♂️
