After watching a replay of Purdue vs UCLA it sure looks like the UCLA defensive DB's are sub par. DR ought to dice them up nicely.

Our defensive scheme has shortcomings that Riley and Maiava spent most of the game exploiting: setting the edge of the defense is not a priority, and often times it seems like everyone in coverage including LBs are just standing there with a bag of popcorn watching the QB while receivers are running free to open spaces where Maiava can flip them the ball. Both of those traits are intentional bend don't break strategies, but I feel like there just has to be a newer and better approach, because it just seems too easy to exploit when the other offensive play caller knows how to attack it.

The defense was visibly better, different schemes and play calls. Still don't like having either of the edges dropping back into coverage, a 270 lb guy just can't be expected to cover receivers in the middle of the field. OL was performing better as well. Neither was at an elite level yet but incremental progress is key. I'm hoping by mid-season they'll be good enough to compete for the conference championship game. That'll be the indicator that they're ready for the CFP.

I recall watching that last USC possession. I don't think LR gave up so much as his players on the field were completely inept and lacked urgency. That's on him. Then again I could be wrong and his players just lost all motivation at that point.

I have a different take and believe that the defense is getting better. The defense stepped up with some huge stops in the 4th quarter to help win the game. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the opposing offense. Riley is one of the best offensive minds and play callers in college football, USC has some young playmakers and their QB can make throws into tight coverage. There are a lot of great points here. It's obvious DR is a dog. I made the comment a couple weeks ago that DR is a better "football" player. Last Saturday only proved my claim. I think it's pretty early to declare that DR gives Oregon a better chance to win. He looked good v. a pathetic SC defense that had no game prep for a backup qb. DR will probably have a few games to prove himself. I think DM is better at protecting the ball and DR will put the ball in harms way more often. I am not ready to throw Donte under the bus after he took a nasty hit and severe head injury. 2 q's of play is way too soon. Donte is a top 2 or 3 QB and DR... IDK

I'm wondering how much of the line's "improved play" is simply that we aren't telling the opposing team if it is a run or a pass before snap

The article hits on the concept of implementing player fines in CFB. I like the idea of CFB player fines... and I mean big, big, ol fines. With the one caveat that the fines have to be paid from coaches paychecks. Plus, the player would be required to do a certain amount of community service in an orange jumpsuit that involves picking up litter along the side of a road. For some, like Stephens, it would probably even give him a jump start on the future career he has ahead of him -- so that's nice. For some reason, if the coaches have to pay, I have a sneaking suspicion that the behavior will stop quite quickly, or kids will start being booted off of football teams. And I'm only halfway kidding about the community service and orange jumpsuit.
