Interesting in trying to track this "efficiency" approach, ATQ found some interesting offensive numbers in its regular season review (only non-garbage time snaps excluding all FCS games). • Oregon rarely takes shots on 2nd and short. In 29 counting plays, it rushed 15 times and threw 14 times. It completed only 3 passes of 10 or more yards on 2nd and short, yielding just 5.85 adjusted ypp. • Oregon was much more likely to throw for big plays on 3rd and short (probably already deciding to go on 4th if necessary). In 38 counting plays, it ran 24 times and threw 14 times. It completed 6 of those 14 passes for 10 or more yards, yielding 14.4 adjusted ypp. • While overall successful on 58% of offensive plays, screen passes were only successful 42% of the time with only a 2% explosive rate and only 4.88 adjusted ypp, compared to overall a 17.5% explosive rate and 7.3 adjusted ypp. Good news maybe is its overall use of all types of screens was down in 2025 from 2024 to 9.5% of offensive snaps (which was about average in FBS football). Bad news was screens in 2025 were even worse in success rate than 2024. This does seem to lead to some credence to the fan idea that while efficiency offense might call for these type plays in certain downs and distances, opponents seem to be sniffing them out and being prepared. Also, if you are watching the offense and you see them in 3rd and medium (3rd and 4 to 7 yards), its probably bad news. By far the offense's worse down and distance at only 28.6% success and only 5.18 adjusted ypp and 9.5% explosives. Makes the stakes of both throwing vertical on 2nd and 6th with an incompletion or running a stuffed bubble screen both very bad for sustaining drives from that down and distance.

The problem with Boise State is that they pretty consistently have a very good football team. We've played them 5 times in the last 18 years with an average point differential of 7: 2008 - UO loss. BSU ends season ranked #11 2009 - UO loss. BSU ends season ranked #4 2017 - UO loss (because it was the Taggert year). BSU ends season ranked #22 2024 - UO wins. BSU ends season ranked #8 2026 - UO wins. My prediction is that BSU ends the season ranked Top-10. Those Broncos were tackling machines this past Saturday. I expect BSU to run the table through their regular season schedule and end up being ranked in the Top-10 again by the end of the season. Our 7-point win will only look better and better as the season progresses.

Fine, but why did UGA, after defeating a nothing-burger team, move up to 2nd instead of LSU that blew out No. 26 Clemson? Why isn't Ole Miss in the Top 5 with a neutral-site win against a Top-25 opponent? Why is 2-0 USC ranked 14th, behind 10 A&M, 11 Oklahoma, and 12 Alabama, all 1-0 with a win against similar or lesser competition? Texas Tech struggled against an FCS opponent and is ranked 13th? Miami traveled across the country and blew out a Power 4 opponent. Miami remains ranked 7th? If OBD crushed Portland State on Saturday, it would have stayed ranked 2nd. It's the AP Poll, so no big deal. However, the PO Committee does the same stuff. It should not have taken until the final ranking to rank 2-loss Miami ahead of a 2-loss Notre Dame team it defeated, especially since ND played four games against G6 competition. There is too much difference between the strength of schedules and too few game data points to objectively determine the best teams. Why the PO should go to a 24-team field.

This win against Boise State will likely count as a win against a ranked opponent by season’s end. Looking at Oregon’s schedule, they have only three ranked opponents left on the schedule. Of course, that may change by season’s end. They will want those ranked wins at the end of the season when they’re being measured against other teams for playoff spots.

As ridiculous as it is, the polls still count. Sure if we finish 12-0 or 11-1 this doesn't hurt us in the slightest. Hypothetically though, if we wind up a bubble team @ 10-2 with losses to tOSU and USC, then that narrow win can and will be used against us, especially if BSU winds up with 2 or 3 losses. I'm not saying it doesn't have value as a teachable moment for DL, but externally it's more of a liability.

Maybe not in the rankings for now but we learned a lot about who we are now and what we need to be if were going to make the playoffs. We only dropped 4 spots which is probably just fine with DL.

Of course we can beat them, we just don't get much value out of the win.

Granted the last two BSU games have been very exciting, but there isn't much advantage to playing them. If we blow them out it's just expected, but if we win a close one it can actually hurt us. There's just not much to be gained, and if we lose then it could really hurt us down the road. A non-conference loss from a big time program wouldn't hurt us near as much. BSU still gets no respect on the national stage and when we narrowly beat them, neither do we.

I love when BSU is on the schedule. To me, watching a great football game is what it's all about. If some losses affect post season positioning or cause elimination all together then to me, you just weren't that team anyway and this just wasn't that year. I also think it's good for the team to get stress tested early to find the flaws in game plans, line ups and adjustments that can be improved on after they have been made obvious. Hiding weaknesses in routes of lesser teams gives you none of that. Easy Ws against weak teams don't feel earned to me. OBD may fall in the rankings this week but they may also have the only win against a playoff team as well. I like that level of battle tested before heading into SUC territory in a few weeks. SUC on the other hand will be basking in the glory of routing a bunch of cupcakes before reality shows up. I know which boat I'd prefer to be in.

Oh, I believe our record would likely be the same with Dilly to this point, perhap we beat Indiana once or twice last year, and we are more at risk this year. Dilly is a bit of a QB whisperer and the personnel are a bit different now that I would be much more confident in Dilly getting the most out of the players we have now.

Thanks John. I apologize for coming across so grouchy. At the end of the day efficiency is the most important metric, so philosophy focused on that is good. But seeing how efficient we can be with explosive passing plays, focusing on a high risk reward isn't the worst idea. But how efficient is taking a TFL on 60% on bubble screens? Maybe with better execution we can get that up to only 30% against a top 5 defense, but is that good enough? Perhaps the numbers advantage isn't the whole story. As a former DB I'd much rather take on a blocker in space who doesn't know exactly where his own ball carrier is coming through, and a ball carrier not looking at me that I can track based on his sideways movement and the trajectory of a pass, rather than going against no blocker and a ball carrier running at me with speed in the open field. It's easier to juke the clueless blocker, and use my upfield speed to corral the ball carrier who has little upfield momentum of his own and only has a split second to locate me and avoid my tackle. I wish Mehringer would just talk to our secondary to get a similar take. On paper the triple option has a superior numerical advantage and should be unstoppable, but numbers ain't everything.

Agreed. I feel the same about Iowa, don't ever want to play them again. They don't mind losing as long as they have a punchers chance against any team in the country, which is what their philosophies schematically give them.
