I don't think Lanning has ever fired a coach. Some have moved on, most of that initial coaching staff has moved on to greener pastures. Three are now head coaches! Which is great. I don't feel like this young coaching staff is going to get the job done for the end goal. I hate to say it but this year has/had a bit of a Natty of bust feel to it, rightly or wrongly. I think all these young coaches will grow this year and they will be better than where they started. But at the end of the day a first or second year teacher is not going to be nearly as good as an average 10+ year vet. I'm not calling for the firing of any coaches at this time but I feel Lanning needs to evaluate his staff at the end of this season. If we win a National Championship then he has done something incredible if we don't and there are questions that need addressing and at that point someone should probably be fired. We have been out-coached too many times in big games. Which is unacceptable for a place like Oregon. It's something to watch for and to think about. No one is getting fired this early in the season or even in the middle of the season.

In Weeks 1 and 2, the effort on the field and the sidelines did not look like a Dan Lanning-coached football team. I do not have enough Xs and Os knowledge to make judgments on player performance, but based on PFF grades to date, Dan missed the mark in player evaluations going into this season. And this overevaluation, at least considering performance to date, led to poor picks, and likely not enough picks, from the portal. We like to think of the program as having a blank check for a budget. But is this the case? Some guys who would have helped the cause, like OT Seaton, found greener pastures elsewhere. Players who decide to stay with the program instead of being certain NFL picks will command hefty revenue-share payments and NIL deals. How much money was there for the portal? As Charles asked in a post, have these experienced and well-paid players been coasting? Your article and many comments on the Forum have asked if the assistant coaches have the gravitas to get the attention of these experienced athletes. As you so noted, Moore's play seems to have regressed. To date, returning in 2026 has hurt and not helped his NFL draft stock. 7 on 7 vs. Portland State will not be what scouts look at. I'm disappointed that Riley's team on the road, once again, played down to the level of the competition. Rutgers could have won the game and arguably should have. I was hoping the Oregon players would have a better performance to watch on TV Saturday and to watch on tape. This will be a re-run of OK State at Tulsa. In five seasons to date, Lincoln Riley is 25-5 in the Coliseum. 10-0 in the last ten games. 4-0 versus the Big Ten in 2025, including impressive wins over Michigan and Iowa. Under Gary Patterson, the SC defense is still shaky. But this offense will put up points, especially if Maiava has time to throw. And the SC run game has looked good behind an OL that returned four starters. OBD will need every bit of the enthusiasm that we saw against Portland State. That is my feeling too. There is a ton of talent on this team, including in the staff Lanning has put together. So far it hasn't looked like we as fans expect it to look. But that can turn on a dime. Just like the preseason hype, it's still to early to draw absolutes about this team and staff. Though I have some serious concerns. Penn State was way more talented last year than the record shows. Portland State, like it or hate it, might have been the blessing Oregon needed. There is a world that its Texas Tech and Penn State happens all over again in Eugene. Hopping that loss followed by the Viks is exactly how it was supposed to be and Oregon puts it together all the way to a NC victory

It is too early to make this declaration, IMHO, as improvements can happen rapidly…like as soon as this weekend.

I like for this team to go into this game as an underdog. That just might get their intensity up. The players and the coaches alike all probably realize they have something to prove. And they do.

Morning everyone and happy Monday, I teased this in one of the other forum threads over the weekend and here it is. Some Uncomfortable Decisions Are Coming at Season’s EndOregon demolished Portland State 84-0 on Friday night.

During the past two seasons as games begin I find myself wondering which DM will play? Will it be the precise passer who uses the entire field of play with confidence? Or is it the DM who looks uncomfortable and cannot locate open receivers, then misses some of the who are open or throws too late? It seems obvious which performance the game holds after two offensive possessions, and it holds generally true for the game. Moore either has it or he does not. If not, the issue is mental not athleticism or skill. He can run, but is not an aggressive threat when a play breaks down. I am relatively sure that Mehringer does not want to erode Moore’s confidence by substituting early for him, but if the Ducks are to advance to their potential he needs to do it. The Ducks have a deep QB room. We need to play the one who can carry and lead the team with excellence-even if it is one game at a time. I am convinced after two seasons that automatically playing Moore every game and every series will result in several losses this season. The coaches need to identify and play the “hot hand”. Or, they need to early see that Dante Moore is “off” his best play, and adjust accordingly. As a once-upon-a-time QB myself, I do not say this lightly with disregard to leadership, continuity, or the need for bolstering QB confidence. When he’s good he is very very good. When he’s not, he can lose the game and it shows early in the first series’.

I wondered about the D line as the hype machine red lined leading up to the season opener. The hype was really loud surrounding this D. What kept hanging me up was redzone, 3rd downs and havoc (tfl, sacks). I thought there was potential, maybe there still is. But I never fully bought in. When you look back at the early 20's UGA D, Miami last year and others, Oregons D doesn't look the same. Hopefully they get there. I am not quite sure that so many so called experts could be wrong about talent claims made regarding Oregons front 4.

Kentucky I believe went out and got 4 starting portal OL. A 5th year senior with 31 consecutive starts from Baylor, a 5th year senior who started the last two seasons at Ohio State, a forth year former 5 star who played in 36 games/25 starts at LSU and Tennessee, and a forth year former top 200 recruit from Alabama (who had not played a lot there yet). Three of its younger back-up OL are also portals from Tennessee, Northwestern, and UTEP. That had to be a decent sized portal investment. Compared to Oregon, who took some heat on portal OL last season, and only went out and got one budget friendly FCS guy. Last season, the one P4 conference portal OL at Oregon ended up a first team AP All-American, and the two G6 guys ended up really ok, especially against most of the schedule (it has been argued elsewhere perhaps expectations for a second team Sun Belt OT and an HM Mountain West OT were perhaps a bit unrealistic as 5th year seniors beyond what they had put on tape). If the 2026 OL doesn't turn itself around, seems like getting possibly spooked in the portal and miscalculating how many young OL were going to be ready to spend NIL bucks elsewhere very well may be an offseason topic. 🤷‍♂️

Our offensive line has actually played decent considering all the inexperienced and injuries suffered already. In my opinion, they will continue to do well enough to score a boatload of points each game, more than enough to win. We could/should have won the Cowboy game by a 31- 17 kind of score, but the defense gave up 39 points. The offense will score enough to win, and while the sacks given up make us uncomfortable...this is what happens with such inexperience on the left side of the O-Line. Regardless of the sacks, we will score more than enough to win with the skill players we have, and with the adequate O-Line play we will see. The REAL question is becoming...."Can the defense hold down opponents enough for Oregon to win?" What we thought was a strength coming into the season has been a big disappointment thus far. Matayo is highly underperforming the hype, and A'Mauri Washington has been completely MIA in three games....WTH? If the defense comes through in LA...we could win that game almost easily, as I believe our offense will score at least 30 for the win. Can our defense step up as we thought they would be in preseason? If this defensive line shuts down opponents as they have the talent to do--we could have a BLOCKBUSTER season yet. But WILL THEY? I am fantasizing a gradual wake-up from them; they will be better in LA, and bordering on awesome by the end of the season. Again--not a prediction, but my current Duck-Fantasy...is it realistic? It is Up to YOU, Guys...

He could also have run out of the back of the end zone before a Vandy player could have come near him. The mistake so clearly indicates that this player is not being paid for his mental prowess.

He is killing it at Cal. He currently leads the FBS with 5 interceptions so far this year.

DR has played in big games, he damn near led an upset of Ohio State his freshman year in Columbus. Had he not gotten hurt vs SC last year, Nebraska would have won and he may have stayed. His uncle was Nebraska’s OL coach, but was fired. Lots led to his leaving and coming to Eugene. DR is a gamer and Donte is a skittish QB. Donte has to fix it or he can kiss his NFL career good bye. He reminds me of Josh Rosen minus the attitude. Donte is QB one and deservedly so.

More on Lincoln Riley. It would not surprise me to see a game like November, 2012 when our DUCKS won a shoot out in Memorial Coliseum 62-51.
