Quick Quack: Oregon vs PSU

Some quick thoughts on the Oregon win over PSU.

Big game is up next against USC.

Big take away was that the entire team came ready to play with intensity. They played hat on hat, physical football. About damn time!

The freshmen did not disappoint. They let the veterans know they are ready to step up and earn playing time.

To me, i noticed a little better push from the Oline. The running backs were 2 or 3 yards positive gain before being touched. Then they fought for more yatds. The line needs to keep improving eaxh week.

When the holes were there the running backs had big gains.

However, its easier to push PSU front 7 around than it will be against future NFL players in LA. But the communication was better. The,Oline was blocking downfield much better and look like they are working together better. Getting your Butt chewed out and hard practices can help that happen.

The run game keeps defenses honest and off balance. This opens up the passing game.

The wide outs and running backs blocked much better on the outside quick throws. This opened up big gains on the edges.

Keeping PSU defense off balance allowed all 4 Duck QB's time to find and hit wide open receivers.

The team needed this tune up, get right game. I am trying to keep this in perspective because all this happened against Portland State.

The Ducks have talent but they will need to bring their A plus game to LA to beat the Trojans.

The Ducks can beat the Trojans. It is a season defining game. But this Trojan defense, is a Gary Patterson defense. A win will not be easy but the Ducks can do it.

Last nights performance gives me hope.

Go Ducks.....

Frankly, if Donte has a bad half against USC.....I would insert Dylan without hesitation. Talent and potential is one thing, winning the big ones with great execution is another. We have the luxury of a Dylan existing and being paid.......use him. He is used to being under pressure at Nebraska.

Never as bad as it looks, never as good as it looks couldn't be more true than for these last two games.

No brain baking, energy sapping heat to hold them back, reenergized mentally and emotionally by the online defamation, and Dan losing a few shoes up people behinds...

And then there are the players; they responded well too...haha.

The back ups on the d-line seemed noticeably more aggressive. They looked fast and motivated.

DR looked better than he ever did in Cornhusker land. The future at QB now looks promising.

It would've been nice if the tv announcers would've mentioned that Josh Bidwell was a cancer survivor...

And the performances of some of the frosh were spectacular!

We need R&R.

Raiola and Riggs are for real.

Brandon Smith seems to be the real deal.

I'm not sure how much was learned in this non-contest". However, there were encouraging signs.

Lastly, I think we should have taken a knee and ended the game 77 - 0

They are very good players and a lot of programs wanted them. The team is lucky they stuck around and did not go into the portal. They need to keep playing, not just in cupcake games.

Ball was fun to watch too. The guy just hit people! He seemed to seek contact to run through it.

Great takes David. Three observations I made.

  1. Raiola Looks like the real deal. I'm glad you mentioned the nullified TD pass. Letting the play develop and observing the field was great to see. I'd also mention the TD pass to Bidwell. He was separating from his defender but also running closer to another one breaking off hiss receiver. Passing it behind Bidwell forcing him to spin 180 degrees to catch it behind him, threaded a needle that wasn't obvious before the throw. Again he stayed present and was observing the game in real time and making smart decisions.

  2. The pass rush still concerns me. There's not a player on the PSU OL that should be able to hold up against any UO starter. That tells ne that containing the pocket as opposed to pressuring the QB is the plan. A ten alligator pass rush will get destroyed by any competent offense. Still concerned here.

  3. The OL giving up some sacks also concerns me. West Linn should be able to give PSU a good game. Neither team should remotely give any position group a problem yet they got a couple sacks. Not good.

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer after 84-0 but the schedule gets real from here on out. If both lines can step up, I like our chances. If not, yikes.

The PSU line only held up for seconds which is why PSU only had 6 first downs... Two of which were Oregon penalties. Otherwise the the PSU QB was just throwing inaccurate balls hoping it worked. Sometimes it did but mostly didn't.

Rushing 4 is the root of the problem here I feel. Offensive line plus a tight end blocker is 6 blockers to 4. But you're right containment is the goal.

As for the sacks... Moore stepped up and into one sack as a lane opened and he wasn't decisive if he wanted to run.

The other sack was on the second string offensive line where Manning didn't hold up and Raiola was sacked.

The second one I feel is more on the offensive line than the first.

Still not great that it happened.

It was good to see the back ups get their shot. Our QB group is intriguing.

I really didn't notice if Dante was faking his foot placement tells to throw people off or not But I did notice that when a pass play was called the pinky on his left hand twitched just a bit. I hope SC wasn't picking that up.

Quick Quack: Oregon vs PSU

Some quick thoughts on the Oregon win over PSU.

Big game is up next against USC.

Thanks, David.

My thoughts: OBD would probably (🤪) be favored to win the Big Sky football championship.

Next week, a Blue Chip instead of a No Chip opponent.

It was good to see the guys fired up on the field and on the sideline.

84 points? Did the Duck have to go to the Emergency Room? I hope Dan wasn't arrested for animal abuse. 😁

I guess the Vikings need the dues, but how about a 24-team PO, ten conference games, and no FCS opponents allowed?

I thought I saw him holding his chin a little but higher pre-snap on pass plays. Saw the receivers taking a siesta lining up for run plays.

Yes, I'm joking.

Now that the other teams know, that we know that they know our tells, they won't trust them when they see them.

Yes, I'm being serious.

I mean... I'll say this.

If I wasn't a die hard Duck fan, and didn't want to write an article, I would have turned it off at half time and done something else with the rest of my evening. But I'm a die hard so here we are.

And though I said that the score and stats don't matter because it's just PSU, the reality is that I kinda expected PSU to get 14-20 points with the way our defense has been playing. But with the talent differential the standard should be shutout. So seeing the shutout and only 6 first downs allowed meets a reasonable standard for this defense against that opponent.

As for the offense I was expecting them to score about 50 with how badly they've been executing the offense.... I didn't expect 48 off the starter by half and another 36 by the second, third and fourth string QBs and company in the second.

But I will say they met the standard of what they should have done to that opponent.

PSU was 0-9 on 3rd. I know its PSU but that is still pretty hard to do as a defense through 60 min. Oregon did it in part with walk-ons for a q.

That says a lot about how weak PSU is, but still
