The Train Came Off the Tracks

This defense is good, but blown assignments are killing it.

The offense is clueless. They run a few good plays that work and then try plays that have no chance.

By far the worst part of it all is seeing the problems in week 1, and then watching progress happen so slowly. And when there is progress, it is only temporary. Then it reverts back.

There has to be some kind of coaching change. Change the plays. Change how you prepare in practice. Change what kind of players you are recruiting. Or change the coaches themselves.

The Oregon football program should not be falling this deep into a pit that they are playing even with mediocre teams all season.

The season is over the halfway point, so if there was a tweak or a quick fix, it would have happened by now.

Maybe Dan Lanning has reached his high point and other coaches have figured it out and they are doing things that Oregon just can't match. It sure feels like it.

I think Oregon will bounce back in time. They have been a force for a quarter century. That counts for something.

I am predicting that we will see a coaching change in the not too distant future. The best players are coming here as much as anywhere else.

This is kind of like when Helfrich was struggling so badly. Maybe hitting rock bottom will force a change for the better?

So who is on your short list for HC? I don't agree that Lanning should be fired. I reserve the right to change my mind. See what he does with Meh' over the next couple days.

No.

Maybe next week Chip will get nostalgic and call a few good offensive plays for the Ducks.

By coaching change, I meant it could be any of them in the program, including DL.

Most likely, we will see a new OC by this winter. And there could be several other new assistants as well.

But if I had to give you a short list right now, it would start with Cignetti. I thought he would fold by now, but he keeps it going.

Cignetti? Chuckle. His current salary is $13.2 million and a contract thru 2033. He is a top 3 salary with Smart and Kiffin.

How many Nike shoes is that???

But seriously, he knows how to use the portal with a checkbook. He doesn't recruit his whole team.

The only college coaches I’d take over Lanning would be Nick Saban (who isn’t coming out of retirement to coach in the cold, rainy PNE), Urban Meyer and Chris Peterson. I believe any of those coaches would be an upgrade, at least in the short term, in terms of coaching chops and would be able to assemble a top of the line coaching staff.

Not saying this will happen but if Phil Knight had a commitment from one of them…

Oregon should “kidnap” Chip when he’s in town next week and strap him to the OC booth seat with a headphone/microphone on his head…

I don’t think Chip will leave a good thing going at Northwestern. They’re doing well and he probably has wide latitude to do what he wants.

I do think Helfrich would be a better choice given his experience, availability, Oregon roots, and high football IQ.

It would be interesting to see what Helfich might cook up in 2026. Hard to believe he is only 52.

That’s the other draw. Still relatively young but a wealth of experience to draw on including making it to the national championship game. Not to mention he’s a good QB coach.

There will be some really good OCs available by the end of the year, like Norvell. Locksley was the OC at Alabama before getting the Maryland job. He’s gonna get fired.

Locksley was already fired.

I don't have any idea if this guy can actually coach, but after reading the following, I'm already half in love with this guy:

Locksley speaking:

"I said, 'Jim (the AD), I understand, and if you have to do what you need to do, I care more about Maryland and these kids than my ego,'" Locksley said. "But what I won't do is resign. But we can talk and figure out how to let the pressure off of everybody because I care more about Maryland."

He was good enough to be the OC at Alabama. He has to be half way decent, right?

If I was Lanning, I would be blowing his phone up all day today.

I just looked it up, and in his 2 years as OC at alabama, in his first season they won the national championship, and in his second season as OC they were runner-up. That doesn't exactly suck.

And I like that he took over head coach at Maryland when that place was a total and absolute crap storm disaster. He stabilized the program. Got them into some Bowl games. And, along the way, learned that the head coaching role is not for him.

I really know very very little about him. But I love the fact that he has no desire to be a head coach. It's great when people have enough maturity to know where their strengths are and know where their skills and abilities are best utilized.

At a minimum, he appears to be somebody definitely worth taking a look at.

New HC, just no. In fact, hell no 😊! Lanning screwed up with his OC and assessment of OL quality but that doesn’t mean he won’t learn and get better.

I honestly feel that a humble Lanning could become a dangerous Lanning. A few smart coaching decisions could lead to roster retention which could lead to bigger and better things in the near future.

At this point, I absolutely agree. Let's see if Dan can learn, get his ego in check a bit, make better hiring decisions, and turn this listing ship around.

No.

Agree. Still 100% in on Lanning on my end. He made 1 bad decision. He made the right decision this morning when he fired Mehringer. Give him a chance to fix it.
