The Real 'Portal King' is NOT Who You Think and the NFL Draft Numbers Prove It We’ve handed the “Portal King” nickname to multiple coaches through the years. First, it was Florida State’s Mike Norvell. Then Lane Kiffin took the title. But if the true ruler of the portal is the one who can win with transfers and put them into the NFL — which, in turn, will help attract even better transfers — then we need to pass the crown again. Congratulations to Oregon’s Dan Lanning, who has had more transfer players drafted than any other coach since the NCAA changed the transfer rules and began allowing NIL payments. Lanning has had 17 transfer players chosen in the past four drafts. The coach he replaced in Eugene, Miami’s Mario Cristobal, is tied for second with 12. Kiffin, who just left Ole Miss for LSU, is the other coach in second. Following last month’s draft, I charted how many transfer players were drafted between 2023-26. I included only players who played for two or more four-year schools. Players who started in junior college and then played for one four-year school — a more traditional path — were grouped with the players who only played for one four-year school. This produced a group of 333 players, and each year saw more transfers drafted. In 2023, NFL teams chose only 50 transfer players. That number rose to 75 in 2024, 91 in 2025 and 117 this year. Lanning’s Ducks led the way with one of the more even distributions of transfer draftees. While other schools were heavier in certain years, Oregon had at least three transfers drafted in each of the four years in the sample. Some of the top draftees were one-year Ducks such as CB Christian Gonzalez (No. 17 overall in 2023), DT Derrick Harmon (No. 21 overall in 2025) and S Dillon Thieneman (No. 25 overall in 2026). Others, including 2024 first-round QB Bo Nix, played multiple seasons in Eugene after transferring. Lanning has done this without sacrificing high school recruiting and long-term development of recruited players. In the same four-draft period, NFL teams took 14 players who signed with Oregon out of high school. The same offseason Oregon got Gonzalez in the portal from Colorado, the Ducks signed eventual 2025 first-rounder Josh Conerly out of high school. The following year, Oregon signed 2026 first-rounder Kenyon Sadiq out of high school. That class also included defensive tackle A’mauri Washington, who has popped up on many 2027 way-too-early mock drafts. This part probably helps the portal draft numbers. Oregon isn’t shy about spending top dollar in the portal, but the Ducks can focus that spending better because, when they do take transfers, it’s usually to fill a specific, immediate need, since homegrown players fill most of the roles.

Great article David, as I am predicting that this is the year where the balance of the offense shifts to the passing game. Mehringer has hinted that we have the personnel to go deep often, and we saw him take shots in the Spring Game...even when our defense knew it was coming. We also have a 5-Star freshman receiver coming in, so this group is loaded. Between Dante Moore's passing ability and upgraded understanding of the position, and some receivers who want to break out--this is the year where we truly show an NFL passing offense, as Drew Mehringer alluded to. Well, I am not optimistic about what they turn it into. If they were serious about continuing to publish about Oregon Sports--you would think they would have a requirement that I and the four writers would stay on for a while to provide continuity. Nope.

There is NO DOUBT...this forum will continue, but instead of at forum.fishduck.com it will be at discussobd.com and will be the same as before....same site only moved to a new web address. Again...we are projected to have revenue from the conference at 54 million for this school year, vs. the 26 million we would have received from the Pac-12. And that 54 million is rising due to the media contract, conference success in both the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and the Football Playoff. We will eventually be earning more than most of the Big-10 members in a few years....

9-1 Washington after six innings. Well, just as I praise our relief pitching....we get our butts kicked. We went through a boatload of pitchers in this inning, and they all got shelled. I can't stomach this anymore because I ran out of barf-bags. I will check in, and let you know the final later. Can't watch...

2-1 Washington after five innings. Nothing on offense, again, but Oregon's pitchers, like Miles Gosztola, has kept the Ducks in the game with a chance to win. Gosztola got two outs, but had two base runners, one on third. So Luke Morgan came into a high-leverage situation, and generated the third out with a fly-ball.

2-1 Washington after two innings. Apparently, they are expecting a temperature over 80 degrees, which would be an all-time record for May 3rd in Seattle. The hits could sail! Oregon's Drew Smith hits through the gap exposed by their shift, and Angel Laya walks. Maddox Molony walks, and Gabe Miranda hits a deep sacrifice-fly to CF to score Smith. And then the Ducks stranded two on base... The Duck pitcher, Miles Gosztola, gave up a hit, but kept the Bastard Huskies scoreless this inning.

2-0 Washington after the first inning. Nothing on offense... Oregon's Miles Gosztola gave up a hit and a two-run homer. Not the start we wanted!

We have a pitcher at Washington who has an ERA of 6.75 and has pitched well in recent games. He fanned our batters in the first inning.... Oregon counters with Miles Gosztola, with an ERA of 4.00 and we would love to have a great game that he had versus Penn State last week again. Miles Gosztola

Molony went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run, a solo shot, a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly to lead Oregon (35-11, 17-6 Big Ten) to the win. Angel Laya added a three-run homer and scored two runs, while Drew Smith finished with three hits and a pair of runs scored. For the second game in a row, Oregon’s bullpen did not allow a run while tossing at least five innings. Leo Uelmen (2-0) got the win, tossing a scoreless fifth inning while Jonah Barkoff, Cal Scolari and Devin Bell all tossed at least a scoreless inning with Bell getting the final five outs. How It Happened: Washington (20-26, 9-14 Big Ten) took the early lead with a first-inning solo home run, before tacking on a run with a two-out double in the second. Oregon cut the lead in half in the third. Burke-Lee Mabeus led off the frame with an opposite-field triple before scoring on a Molony sacrifice fly. The Huskies pushed the lead back to two with an unearned run in the third, before adding a fourth run for a three-run lead in the fourth. The Ducks answered in the top of the fifth. After Mabeus reached on an infield hit, Molony followed belting the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall to cut the lead to 4-3. Maddox Molony celebrates 2-Run HR In the sixth, Molony made the Huskies pay after they chose to intentionally walk Mabeus to load the bases with two outs. The Ducks’ shortstop poked a ball through the right side to score two and give the Ducks a 5-4 lead. Oregon kept the offense rolling in the seventh inning, scoring four more runs. Brayden Jaksa started the rally with a single off the pitcher that deflected into right field. Ryan Cooney moved Jaksa to second with a base hit through the right side before Smith picked up an RBI with a hit through the left side. Laya followed with a three-run homer off the batter’s eye to push the lead to 9-4. Molony made it a six-run game when he belted his second homer of the day in the eighth inning. Washington threatened in the sixth and seventh putting two runners on with no outs. Barkoff, making just his second career appearance with both coming this week, got out of the sixth-inning jam striking out the next three batters. Scolari, who made his first career relief appearance, did the same fanning the last three batters he faced after allowing a hit and issuing a walk. Devin Bell In the eighth, the Huskies loaded the bases with one out forcing Oregon to turn to Bell to get out of the inning. The Ducks’ closer enticed an inning-ending double play on a 3-2 count to end the threat. He finished the win off in the ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced. Box Score Notes: Dominic Hellman made his 100th career start joining Smith, Molony and Cooney in the 100-start club … Molony’s homers were his 34th and 35th of his career … The two-homer game was the seventh of his career … Molony’s six RBI matched a career high … Laya’s home run was his 13th of his freshman campaign … Oregon has now won 23 of 25 series since the beginning of the 2025 season. It is noteworthy as well that Nebraska lost to Ohio State again today to place both the Cornhuskers and Oregon tied for second in the conference with six losses each at the moment. Gotta sweep tomorrow at 1:00 PM on B1G+!

Ducks win 10-4 as Devin Bell blows the hapless Huskies away with his 96 mph heater in the 9th. The young-gun pitchers did well to stop the scoring again, and watching the progress and growth of so many is encouraging for the season's end. This is Oregon's seventh win in a row, and most were tough, gritty, find-a-way-to-win kind of games, and these last two we had to come from behind at 4-2 last night, and down 4-1 tonight. It is also the seventh win in a row over Washington...

10-4 Ducks after eight innings. Maddox Molony continues his batting resurgence as he annihilates a pitch and sends it over the LF wall and into the Husky bullpen! Freshman pitcher Shane Johnson got his chance to get experience, but he loaded the bases with only one out. So in comes closer Devin Bell, who creates a double-play to finish the inning!

9-4 Ducks after seven innings. More offense vs Husky relief pitchers... Brayden Jaksa nails the pitcher, and beats the throw to first base, while Ryan Cooney got a knock through the right infield to put both on. Drew Smith then sends a screamer down the third baseline, and the left fielder bobbles it, so not only does Jaksa score, but the other runners are in scoring position at second and third. No matter as Angel Laya got his beautiful swing under one and sent it over the CF wall for a 3-Run Homer! Knock me over with a Duck feather to see Cal Scolari trot out as another reliever! He is working his way back from injury, and although he gave up two base runners, he got three strikeouts to keep Washington contained to no runs this inning.

6-5 Ducks after six innings. Finally, the bats got going! Drew Smith hit opposite through the right infield for a hit, and Angel Laya also hits a slice into an open spot opposite to LF. Then a double-steal! Maddox Molony is an RBI machine tonight as he pulverized a liner through the right infield that scores Smith and Laya. All five runs batted in by him tonight! RS Freshman Jonah Barkoff is in for only his second time, but he was injured this fall and thus why the delayed start. Big-strong looking LHP, and was the No. 1 pitcher in Oregon as a HS senior. Now we see his power, and although he gave up two base runners--he got it done with two final strikeouts to keep the Huskies scoreless this inning.
